Marta, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
A lot of people might not realise how much work goes into photography. There is a lot of pre-planning that I have to do when it comes to a wedding shoot. I love being able to take the stress off of my brides and help them with things like timeline, planning detail shoot or making a shot list for them to keep so they know exactly what to expect.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! My name is Marta and I am a Raleigh based wedding photographer and a small business owner. I currently have two businesses that I am running. One is my photography business called “Marta Morales Photo” and the other is “2TheMoons Designs” my handmade accessories business. My approach to running a succesfull business is you have to truly love what you do. There might be times when it will be hard to stay motivated. But when you really love what you do it won’t make you want to quit after a minor inconvinience.
A little backstory about me. I have been obsessed with photography since very young age and actually started my photography business when I was 17 years old back in 2017. I took a couple of years off because of a burnout and honestly I was just too young. Now I have a clear vision of what I want my photography business to look like and I am currently working hard to bring that vision to life.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
That would have to be my mom. I can’t recall the amount of times she told me that I need to pursue photography. Even back when I didn’t have my professional camera she would always tell me that I have an eye for photos. When I decided to take a break from my photography business back in 2020 she was probably more devastated about it than I was. She never failed to believe that I will eventually pick my camera back up and she was absolutely right.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely! Around the end of 2019 is when I started experiencing a burnout and that’s when I did give up and took my break from my business. The biggest reason why I stopped taking pictures was because I had multiple clients who were trying to take advantage of me being young and inexperienced in bussiness. They would either refuse to pay the amount that we agreed upon or keep asking me to send them more pictures even though I clearly stated how much they will be getting at the end. And me being young I took it as a sign that I will never make a successfull business and people will just keep using me. I was a lot more sensitive back then, oh well.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Oh yes definetly! My whole life I was never able to put on a mask or hide my emotions. It was always so foreign to me how people completely change when they go to work or school. It does get me into trouble sometimes because I am unable to do such things as fake laugh or not show my emotions on my face. People don’t always like to see what others really think. I definetly never want to be rude but I will also never lie to you about how I feel or what I think.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I truly love connecting with my clients and making them feel comfortable at their photoshoots. I hope people feel that connection too and share it with others. I just want my clients to be happy!
