Meet Alexandra Wurst

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Wurst.

Hi Alexandra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I always wanted to be in media, but being from a small town of Salisbury, NC I just thought it wasn’t possible to get into that industry because I never knew anyone to be in that career field. As the years go by and I get into college, Vine, Snapchat, and Instagram started becoming a thing and being able to make videos. I started messing around with it and my college was small, so we all knew each other and followed each other and I would get told how entertaining and funny I was! So, it started getting back in my head of trying to do something with media again.

But also, I was talking to this guy at the time who was telling me about a new hip hop radio station in Charlotte and it was around a time where I needed an internship in college to get more credits and graduate. So, I looked into applying for an internship with Streetz 103.3 Radio and they saw my social media and my personality and brought me on! Once I graduated college, they hired me for part-time and I was there for three years just building my radio brand and eventually got my first full-time radio gig in South Bend, Indiana. I was there for a year, then got a job at a station in Albany, NY and I had all plans to become a New York resident and never come back to NC lol.

But then this position at K 97.5 opened up and the program director there is really close with the people I worked for in Charlotte at Streetz. I soon realized that this radio industry is very small and it’s all about who you know! I go through the whole interview process and it took a couple of weeks of going from top 25 to top 5 to top 2 and I really thought I wasn’t going to get the job.

It wasn’t until I was at the nail shop where I’m telling my nail lady about the possibility of maybe moving back to NC and I get a call from the program director and he offered me the job and I ran laps in the nail salon I was so excited! I couldn’t believe it! I had so many emotions running! I KNEW this new job would be a great look for my radio career for tons of things and I’ve been here for about a year and it definitely was a great decision!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road. I had to deal with a lot of things of getting overlooked for either being younger than anyone or being a woman in this industry and just getting passed upon opportunities that would go to the men who been in the radio game for a longer time or had a bigger name than mine.

I also had to deal with some situations of me having great ideas for the radio station, but having to handle bosses and management not understanding the vision or seeing how good the outcome of some ideas would have been.

I’ve been in radio for six years, so it wasn’t always easy, but I believe that everything happens for a reason and you learn and you grow from everything that could be negative. Just got to turn it into a positive and get through it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
So, I am a radio personality. I have a show on K 97.5. I do middays which is Monday – Friday 10 am – 3 pm. Of course, I play your favorite music, but I also try to be funny and informative between those songs and make it a whole vibe while you are listening. But aside from being on the radio, I also do things like host events in the community, doing interviews with celebrities, and creating content.

What I am most proud of is really the content that I’ve been able to create. I have this segment called Ayeeedubbs Group Chat where I ask a question each day and I have people comment on it and share their answers. It has become really engaging and I have people looking forward to the question or scenario each day! I also create a video version on Mondays that lets me show off my editing and writing skills and those videos do really well also.

I believe that is what sets me apart from others. I always say in this industry it can be repetitive and we all end up saying the same news or same headline but it’s HOW you say it. You always got to switch it up and be different and unique and I believe I do a really good job at being different and innovative.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters the most to me is really just enjoying life to the fullest. I had someone ask me recently how do I maintain such a positive attitude while being so busy and I’m just like, I really enjoy what I get to do every single day. I get to be ME for a living like that’s amazing. I always want everyone around me to be happy. I even want YOU to be happy no matter what. With everything that’s been going on, it really could be anyone’s last day, so why not try to enjoy every part of it that you can. Being genuinely happy is what matters most to me and being able to help someone see their amazing potential and how to enjoy life as well.
