Today we’d like to introduce you to Allie Mullin.
Hi Allie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began my business as a college photojournalism student. I was applying to unpaid internships as the newspaper industry was failing while doing weddings and portraits for friends and local clients.
Word of mouth has brought me to so many folks over the years. I got into branding photography at the encouragement of Megan George of The Zen Succulent, who became my first branding client.
Currently I do a mix of branding, portraits, and intimate weddings and elopements, as well as art prints.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every creative endeavor comes with its challenges. I’ve learned how to create a workflow for projects, do my own bookkeeping, and create a photographic style that resonates and has its own voice, among other things.
I call my work “practice” because that’s exactly what I’m doing.
Finding a balance between my work, personal projects, and my life has been a struggle. Sometimes that’s a joyful thing: I now know that my worth as a human being is not defined by my work. On the less comfortable side I have experienced feelings of impostor syndrome, and the painful liminal space of knowing that my best work is ahead of me.
I’m immunocompromised and used to feel guilty for not working as much as I “should.” Now I’m more compassionate towards myself, and I take a sabbatical at the end of each year to recharge. I reject the hustle now, and that feels like an enormous success.
The pandemic has given me more challenges, of course. I did sessions with a lot less physical contact than in the past, and while it was difficult at first, my work is better than ever and I’m keeping myself and others safe.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a professional photographer. I make portraits for couples, individuals, and families. I photograph intimate weddings and elopements for folks in love. I do brand photography for entrepreneurs who want to connect deeply with their customers and have brilliant offerings.
I also create art prints. Mostly skies, food, and spooky things.
Outside of client work I have a yearly project called Allie’s 31 Days of Halloween. I make an image every day for October (the best month). At this point most people think my birthday is Halloween, heh.
I’m proud to make work that resonates emotionally.
What sets me apart from others? I’m not a huge fan of this question, because I’m not interested in competition anymore. My work empowers both me and my clients, and that’s enough.
What’s next?
I want to channel light, connect with my clients, and give the world beautiful photographs. My work has evolved slowly and gradually since I did my first wedding in 2007, and I’d like to continue that development (ha! almost made it to the end of this interview without a photo pun).
