Meet Angelica Greene of Durham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelica Greene.

Hi Angelica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Angelica Stroud Greene is a Durham, North Carolina native whose life has been defined by God, service, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to her community. Raised in Durham, she developed a deep sense of responsibility to the city that shaped her, a responsibility she has honored in every chapter of her life.

A proud graduate of North Carolina Central University, Angelica carried forward NCCU’s legacy of purpose, excellence, and leadership as she built both her career and her family. She is a devoted wife, a loving mother to one child, and a proud grandmother of four. Family has always been her foundation, providing strength and perspective throughout her journey.

In 1997, Angelica joined the Durham Fire Department, entering a field where few women and even fewer African American women had been given opportunities to lead. Through dedication, discipline, and integrity, she rose through the ranks, becoming the first African American female Captain and later the first African American female Battalion Chief in the department’s history. These achievements represented more than personal milestones. They marked progress for the department and opened doors for future generations.

Angelica’s influence extended well beyond her leadership roles. One of her most notable accomplishments was receiving national recognition for a fire safety program focused on seniors and individuals with physical challenges, ensuring that vulnerable populations were not overlooked in emergency preparedness. Her work gained widespread attention and recognition, including a Firehouse Subs Cup appearance, NCCU publications and features in Firehouse Magazine to name a few. These acknowledgments highlighted both her innovation in public safety and her commitment to inclusive community care.

Her dedication to Durham also led her to found Take Back Durham, a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening community engagement and restoring pride, safety, and unity across the city. Through this work, Angelica reinforced her belief that meaningful change begins when communities actively invest in themselves.

After decades of distinguished service, Angelica retired from the Durham Fire Department on December 31, 2024. True to her character, retirement marked not an end, but a new beginning. On January 2, 2025, she opened Angel World of Flowers, located at 901 Fayetteville Street, Suite 101, bringing beauty, creativity, and care to the same community she spent years protecting. The flower shop stands as a reflection of her lifelong mission to uplift others, this time through art, expression, and entrepreneurship.

Today, Angelica Stroud Greene’s legacy is one of courage, compassion, and lasting impact. From breaking barriers in public service to earning national recognition, founding a nonprofit, and building a woman-owned business, her life’s work reflects a deep love for Durham and its people. Her story continues to inspire not only through the history she made, but through the example she sets for what purposeful leadership truly looks like.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the main challenges faced was navigating the physical and cultural demands of the fire service. Standing at 5’3”, the job often required extra effort when performing physically demanding tasks like lifting and throwing ladders, but the standards were met the same as others. As a Black woman in a predominantly white, male profession, there were moments of isolation and doubt, including being told early in the career that I would never see the front seat of the fire truck. Rather than letting these challenges define any limits, they were used as motivation to prove capable through consistency, professionalism, and leadership.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Opening Angel World of Flowers has been one of the most fulfilling chapters of my life. As a business owner, I find joy in creating beauty that brings comfort, celebration, and connection to others. The shop allows me to continue serving my community in a new way, turning meaningful moments into lasting memories through flowers. I also take pride in building something of my own, making independent decisions, and creating a welcoming space that reflects my values, creativity, and commitment to Durham.

What matters most to you? Why?
Building relationships matter most to me because people may not remember what you said but they will remember how you made them feel. Getting to know my customers, their story and helping them with whatever their floral needs are is very important.
