Hi Ashlee, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My grandmother was a tax preparer when I was in high school so I decided to take the tax class that HR Block had to offer when I was still in High School. I passed the class and began doing taxes when I turned 18. I had worked for HR Block seasonal while in school and beginning my family. After my divorce from a controlling and abusive spouse I started working at Liberty Tax as the manager of 3 of the offices in the town next to where I lived. I also taught the federal tax class to become a Tax Preparer with Liberty for 5 of the 6 years I worked there. The summer after my 6th season with Liberty Tax we realized our boss was stealing our payroll taxes from us so I decided it was time for me to leave. After 22 years of doing taxes for other companies I decided in the fall of 2024 it was time to build a legacy of my own and opened 2 Skirts Tax and Bookkeeping. It was very difficult in the beginning keeping my business open because of my non compete contract I was in with Liberty Tax still. I received on 2 different occasions Notice of Intent to Sue letters from Liberty Taxes lawyers as well as cease and desist letters and after a very expensive lawyer bill and months of back and forth they finally left my business alone. This was at the very beginning of our first season. We have been here 2 years now and this year I was able to hire 4 employees to help me with growing my little tax and bookkeeping business. I am also still teaching the tax class and this fall will be our second federal tax class that I have offered as 2 Skirts Tax and Bookkeeping. We plan on expanding and opening an office in Clinton NC in the near future.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No it was very difficult. Financial struggles as well as the threat of a lawsuit on multiple occasions had made it very difficult in the beginning. I am finally able to see an amazing future for 2 Skirts Tax with the support of my clients, employees, and husband who have gone above and beyond to help me to succeed as well as everyone who helped overcome the lawsuit troubles in the very beginning that had me terrified I wasnt going to be able to see my dream through.
