Meet Betty Roman of Cary, NC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Betty Roman.

Hi Betty, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Betty has been a practicing esthetician for thirty years and spa owner for twenty-five years, having opened Cary, North Carolina’s premier day spa in 1991. Romàn Skin and Body Care recently celebrated their 25th year. Anniversary with a celebration and a featured article in the Cary News and News and Observer. She was born in North Carolina and raised in Georgia, and since a very young age Betty was always interested in the world of beauty, especially as it pertained to skin care. This was due in part by her own skin issues as a teen and young adult. She completed her initial training from a private skin care institute located in the Washington, D.C. area. She then took the knowledge she gained from the skin care institute and went on to pursue the prestigious international CIDESCO Diploma. She also trained in Paris, France, which helped shaped her skin care philosophy she follows today. After completing her training she began her mission of helping to forge a path toward separate skin care licensing for the state of North Carolina.

As a pioneer, she co-founded the North Carolina Esthetician Association (NCEA) with the sole purpose of obtaining licensing thus creating a higher standard for the professional skin care industry. Betty, along with others, helped secure the passage of a Bill in 1998 to create separate licensure for estheticians in North Carolina. However, she did not stop there. She continued to work with her State Board of Cosmetic Art as an instructor for continuing education, examiner, and curriculum developer. Her knowledge and expertise helped lay the foundation for professional skin care in the state of North Carolina. Over the years Betty has never left her first love—lending her experience, knowledge and expertise to help women, men and teens achieve healthy, beautiful skin.

She loves to share her knowledge and expertise to educate her clients regarding professional skin care services. In addition, over the years she has authored numerous articles as it pertains to skin care. She also enjoys educating aspiring Estheticians as she shares her knowledge and expertise with others in her day spa

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overall, I would say it has been smooth. However, as any small business owner will tell you, it isn’t always
easy having your own business. I have been blessed, with good employees over the years and my challenges came more from world events, i.e,. recessions, pandemics, economy, etc. However, going through difficult times causes you to become more resourceful, and a better business person. Yes, I had to learn some things the hard way, but most omy personal growth as a business owner came from going through difficult times.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Roman Skin and Body Care, Cary’s premier Day Spa, established in 1991, is a Day Spa, known for our facials, and our Natural, holistic approach to reversing the signs of aging through state of the art treatments and therapies that make the need for more invasive treatments less necessary. We carry European Skin Care lines with most made in France. Over the years, I’ve been to Paris for additional training and classes. My natural approach and philosophy was formed early on with training I received through CIDESCO international certification. Our menu of service includes Facials for all skin types, with our speciality being anti-aging facial treatments. Other services include body treatments, lash and brow tinting, lash lifts, face and body waxing, and dermaplaning. I’m not into quick fixes that might yield impressive results initially, but may not be good for the skin long term. I feel confident in the services we offer, and the fact that clients have been coming to us for many decades is proof that they are happy with their results and they can trust us with their skincare needs.

We treat the cause of skin issues and not just the symptoms, stressing a healthy diet and lifestyle, wearing sunscreen, avoiding processed food, smoking, and alcohol. The many compliments our clients receive keeps them coming back. Also, by making facials part of their lifestyle, as is more common in most European countries, especially France, they are practicing prevention and will likely never feel the need for more invasive procedures later.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
One of the first pioneers that was instrumental in bringing the world of professional skin care to the U.S. was Christine Valmy, who opened the first skincare institute located in New York. Other pioneers that I had the privilege to meet and learn from were Erica Miller, Sylvie Hennessey, Mark Lees, Rhonda Allison, Lydia Safati, Bella Schneider, and many others. Most of them started their professional skincare journey 30 years ago. Many are active to this day and still passionate about this industry. Their main contribution was in Education.

I believed early on that the more educated I was in my chosen field the more confident I would be in the services I wanted to offer in my spa. Education has played a key role in my career, and in my commitment to help secure separate licensure for N.C., with the passage of a bill in 1999. This was accomplished by the liaison formed between the State Board Cosmetic Art, and the North Carolina Aesthetician Association, which I co-founded. This team effort over many years resulted in the spa and skincare world we know today. I’m grateful and thankful that I had the opportunity to be a part of the passage of this bill, thus creating a higher standard for the professional skin care industry in North Carolina. This accomplishment will always be one of the highlights of my career.
