Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Phillips.
Hi Brett, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Brett Phillips. I am a lifelong musician who’s been playing music professionally since I was 15 years old.
Currently I am active as a solo performer, but I also play guitar in a band called the Separate, which I have been apart of since 2009.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Playing music professionally has been a journey with its share of challenges. Because of the changing landscape of the music business, I realized early on that I needed to find a way to balance my passion for performing music with a steady reliable income. Shortly after graduating from college, I began a career as a CAD designer, and I currently work for an engineering firm in the Triangle. This career has allowed me to maintain a stable professional life while continuing to pursue music freely and on my own terms, without the pressure of relying on music as my sole source of income.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My most proud accomplishment is the three albums I have recorded with my band the Separate. They are all available on all the online streaming platforms.
We’ve recently announced a reunion show after a long hiatus with another North Carolina band, Sumerlin, on September 18th, in Dunn, NC at the Bird’s Nest Listening Room. We were able to sell out the venue and it has been very humbling to see that people still care about our music after all this time! We haven’t put out a release since 2016, but are planning on releasing new music soon.
Besides my work with the band, I’ve been really focused on playing solo music, accompanied by my talented wife on violin. We are playing a show in November for the Cotton Festival (also in Dunn). I’ve released 2 EPs on my Bandcamp page and have some music on Spotify, with more coming soon.
How do you think about happiness?
In general, my happiness comes from being with my wife and family/friends, and our three cats.
Artistically, I get happiness from playing music and just being creative. I’ve been doing this for so long and have learned that if it isn’t enjoyable, it’s not worth doing. So whether it’s playing for weddings, live concerts, recording, or writing songs, I give it 100%, because playing music is something I love.
