Meet Chris Murphy of Raleigh NC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Murphy

Hi Chris, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I went to college for art at the University of Delaware, where I honed my artistic skills and developed a deep appreciation for creative expression. This foundation in art led me to explore the world of tattooing, where I could blend my passion for art with a new medium. Using the knowledge and skills I gained in college, I mastered the tattoo machine, transforming skin into canvases for unique and meaningful designs.

During this journey, I met a couple of talented artists who shared my vision and enthusiasm. Together, we decided to open our own tattoo studio in Raleigh. This dream became a reality with the establishment of “Mystics Tattoo,” a place where artistry and individuality are celebrated.

But we wanted to offer more than just tattoos. We envisioned a space that would foster community and creativity. Thus, we developed our brand to include a punk rock coffee shop inside the studio. Here, our customers can enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and sip on Raleigh’s own “Bad Brain Coffee Co.” branded coffee.

Mystics Tattoo is not just a studio; it’s a cultural hub where art, music, and coffee converge to create a unique experience for everyone who walks through our doors.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey to becoming a tattoo artist hasn’t been straightforward. I gave up a stable career to follow my dream, despite the limited training available and significant gatekeeping in the industry, which often imposes certain styles and methods. This was a daunting decision, given the uncertainty and financial instability that come with pursuing a creative career.

Additionally, the shops where I worked didn’t align with the quality of work I aspired to create. They often lacked a focus on artistic integrity and innovation, which left me feeling unfulfilled and disconnected from my passion. Navigating these challenges required a great deal of perseverance and resilience, but they also fueled my determination to create a space where high-quality, creative tattooing could flourish.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a tattoo artist specializing in intricate details and vibrant artwork. I take great pride in ensuring every client leaves satisfied with their tattoo. If something isn’t to their liking, I will do my utmost to improve it, putting meticulous attention into every piece to make it truly special.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a quiet kid with ADD who had a passion for exploring a wide range of interests. My curiosity drove me to delve into any hobby I could get my hands on, always eager to learn and master new skills. Music played a significant role in my life; I was deeply influenced by punk and rock genres, and I dedicated countless hours to playing both the drums and guitar.

Art was another major interest of mine, providing a creative outlet where I could express myself through drawing and painting. Additionally, I was very active and enjoyed participating in various sports, which helped me stay engaged and balanced. These diverse experiences shaped who I am today, fostering a love for creativity and a determination to excel in whatever I pursue.
