Meet David Vichesky

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Vichesky.

Hi David, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After over 20 years curating apparel, beauty, and home furnishings for some of the most recognizable national retail brands, I was tired of executing someone else’s vision; I was ready to share products and style that inspires me with the world. So many times, I’d connect with people who found styling their home or identifying their aesthetic too challenging, even overwhelming. That’s why I created The Commonwealth, a home and lifestyle brand that believes in living with simplicity, where form and function complement each other. I love the idea of bringing the natural world into our lives through a mix of textures and materials like linen, paper, cotton, wood, marble, and more. There’s a particular peace that comes from surrounding yourself with neutral colors, organic shapes, and things that feel “found.” I love curating this collection of decor, dining, bedding, lifestyle, and skincare products to make everyone’s life simply chic.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing worth doing is easy right out of the gate. Building your own business is a slow grind that takes a lot of passion to fuel. My advice is to start with a clear brand identity because your business should have a point of view to share. Next, create a business plan, one that will communicate your vision with your target audience. Finally, shore up support — you wouldn’t jump out of a plane without a parachute.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As the owner of The Commonwealth, I create the brand identity and curate the products in the collection. I’m so proud to be a small business owner because it gives me the creative control I love and puts me on the front lines with customers.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I have found that most of the time, pursuing something you love, or something new, means you’ll face some degree of risk. I think about taking risks like walking a tightrope: it’s scary, but the best way to mitigate any actual danger is to go slow, be deliberate, and create a safety net to catch you when you fall.
