Meet Dr. Jennifer Moore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jennifer Moore.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Mount Olive, NC. I’ve always been interested in community engagement since childhood. I joined my local NAACP chapter when I was 11 years old. Growing up I always loved helping others in my community. Community engagement is beautiful. My parents taught me that there was an innate need to contribute to the community. I noticed very early on that there was a lack of conversations about mental health. Over time, I began obtaining college degrees to help me fulfill my walk. I began with my Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts, then a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. While working as a special educator and as a mental health paraprofessional, I attained my Master’s in Business Administration, then a Master’s of Science in Human Performance Improvement. I enjoyed working with students, families, and community members. I began to get more actively involved in the community and joined local and state organizations to help my community. In 2017, God gave me the vision of Lennix James, but I stepped away from my purpose mainly because I was afraid to talk about mental health stigmas and mental health issues. I continued pursuing my education and in doing so, I attained a doctorate (Doctor of Business Administration) and then an N.C. Peer Support Specialist certification. I re-launched Lennix James Foundation, LLC in 2021. I have hosted mental health forums and will continue to educate others on the stigmas and barriers around mental health. The support from my family, community members, and local organizations makes my work fulfilling. I am thankful for every opportunity.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, I cannot say that it has been a smooth road. A few years after initially launching Lennix James Foundation, LLC “life” happened, and it was rapid. I faced a lot of medical struggles and obstacles, but I used those obstacles as motivation. Some of the other struggles consisted of a lack of support and lack of funding. I was heavily involved in advocating for education and mental health, so I was distracted at times, and I had little life/work balance. I knew that I needed support, so I connected to Ms. Tina Wheeler with Accion Group Enterprises, and she gave excellent advice on how to relaunch my business, business credit strategies, etc., and that helped me become more successful in accomplishing my business goals.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have been working in education for 15 years. In my current role, I provide academic assistance to faculty and students enrolled in a master’s or Ph.D. program at a local university. I am a part-time peer support specialist providing mental health support that is geared toward recovery. I am known for having a big heart and being “set apart” and determined. I am proud of so much and everything that I have accomplished. I am proud of Lennix James Podcast and the mental health and affirmation journals I created this year. I am proud of my son, my grandchildren, my siblings, my niece, 4 nephews, and my family. I am proud that I get to make a difference in education and in my community. I am also proud to be a part of Tau Gamma Delta Sorority, Inc., a non-profit business organization servicing Durham, NC, and the surrounding areas since 1956. Lastly, I am proud of my momma, sister, and sister-in-law women who continued their education in their 40s and 50s and graduated with honors while working full-time and raising families or taking care of family members. They all inspire me to continue pushing and grinding despite any obstacles that may lie ahead. The main thing that sets me apart from others is knowing my God-fulfilled purpose and how to operate within the purpose He has given me.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was inquisitive, smart, and peculiar. I always made good grades in school, received many academic achievement awards, and graduated with honors from high school. I was very interested in the theory of music. My love for music was around age 4 when my parents purchased my first kids’ piano. I was in the band, marching band, and concert band from middle school throughout college. I have always had a love for reading and research. I remember in 4th grade I had a tough school day, and I had my head down. My father told me “The only time I want to see your head down is in a book. Your schoolwork is important.” I was very close to my father and always sought his guidance on many things growing up. He encouraged me to walk in my gifts at an early age as he realized I was very different from most of my peers.
