Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Terrance Ruth.
Hi Dr. Terrance, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Terrance Ruth, and I am running for Mayor of Raleigh in the 2022 election. I am a proud Raleigh citizen and a dad of a wonderful 6-year-old son who attends Green Elementary. Where he is well supported by the talented team that Principal Brown has assembled. He is a big NCSU football and basketball fan. He requests a football and basketball every Christmas, so he is predictable during the holidays. I am a husband of a beautiful wife, Kiara, and she is key to this decision to run because she is so instrumental to our family unit. She is a fan of shopping local and supporting small businesses. Professionally, I am a former public-school teacher and principal. I teach at NC State in the school of social work. Also, I strongly believe in investing in communities……directly by supporting community leaders and their innovative ideas. Community leaders are closer to the solution than any other member of this city. My family is best positioned to bridge the gap between the community and the city’s leadership.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I am running in part because I am responding to requests for new and reliable leadership from the community. Additionally, I am running because I believe that I hold a unique combination of strengths that can lead our city during this time of recovery from all that has occurred in 2020. I know what it means to worry about affordability, I know what it means to be a teacher and to be on the front lines of the most underinvested communities. I have a passion for this city and those who live in our city, and I will be committed to providing a vision for how to move forward from such a hard year. I am running because we need leadership that has empathy, vision, and confidence in the residents of Raleigh. The year that COVID provided and the year that we witnessed high racial tension has really moved my family to respond to Raleigh’s needs by announcing our candidacy for Mayor of Raleigh.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My dreams of the future are connected to my desire to see community leadership and political leadership at the forefront of innovation again. What if communities imagined, created, and implemented the local change that addressed systemic issues of under-investment, homelessness, and food insecurity? What if innovation started early and did not wait until kids left school? What if the social impact can be measured by the creation of healthy communities? My partnership with United Way of the Triangle has leveraged the leadership of community leaders to move from advocacy to solution creation. I am proud that this partnership has centered communities that are historically underinvested. The future of community health is rested on the creativity of community leaders. I am proud to see this shift.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
