Meet Dwight Foote Jr of TechFluent Creative Agency

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dwight Foote Jr.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My passion for technology began at a very early age. I remember being 8 or 9 years old and troubleshooting a printer that would not release print jobs for a family friend. I had no clue what I was doing. The only thing I was certain of was my passion for understanding technology and dedication to fixing this technical issue. I was happy to adopt the “go-to IT guy” title for my family and friends. My mother knew that technology & engineering was my focus as a young adult. She did an amazing job by ensuring I was able to have experiences that would further my technical skills and knowledge as I entered high school and prepared for college. One summer in high school I was able to attend an engineering camp at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland where I spent days in seminars and engineering classes surrounded with other like-minded teenagers who wanted to be immersed in technology. This experience solidified my interest and I knew from that point I found my passion.

Throughout high school, I began designing websites for a few family friends and found it to be the most enjoyable part of having my own computer. I would spend hours after school and on the weekends designing websites, learning HTML and following tech blogs to get experience and knowledge under my belt. I have to thank my high school web design teacher Ms. Desiree Peterkin for being instrumental in exposing me to web design and being an exceptional instructor. The lessons I learned from Ms. Peterkin followed me throughout college where I took on more freelance work and began to think about one day having my own design firm.

Initially after college, I went into the workforce like many other students because it was the safest option and a steady paycheck. I kept the idea of owning my own business in the back of my mind and sat on ideas until the right time. Fast forward to me completing my Masters of Business & Technology Management, I decided it was time to put aside fears & doubt and start TechFluent Creative Agency.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Owning a business whether small, medium or large is no easy task. You have to really hold yourself accountable in a way that’s different from working a 9 to 5 for a corporation. Every decision you make, every moment you procrastinate, and every opportunity you miss falls in the hands of the business owner.

One of the biggest struggles I still face today is having so many other competitors. This is a double-edged sword because you constantly have to find ways to separate yourself from the competition which can be an intimidating task. On the other hand, I think it forces you as a business owner to get really creative about what sets you apart and what experience you can provide to your clientele.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
My favorite part of Raleigh is the beautiful greenways and parks. I enjoy taking hikes as a way to unplug from my daily routine and to get in some physical activity along the way. As a business owner being in the Triangle Area is always exciting as there are so many opportunities to connect with other business owners and to network with a growing network of professionals.

My least favorite part of Raleigh would be the heat. I’m originally from Baltimore, MD which does have hot summers but there’s something about the heat in North Carolina that feels different. I can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe the readers from the North will understand my gripe!
