Today we’d like to introduce you to Fred Ones
Hi Fred, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Have always been a creative as long as I can remember. Visual arts was my main focus as kid, teenager and young adult. I also picked up DJ skills as a teenager due to my love of Hip Hop music. Upon graduating high school I was accepted to The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where I attended for 2 years, then dropped out to study music production at Columbia College in Chicago. I received a BFA in audio engineering and quickly began the process of starting up my own studio in The Bronx by 1997. I’ve had the pleasure to record and mix independent artist for 28 years. The studio has moved around The Bronx in three different locations and has recently found a new home in Boston, Massachusetts. We are presently working with local artist as well as mixing and mastering remotely for clients in New York. Without that creative influence I’ve attained as a child, I doubt the studio life would have lasted this long.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The entrepreneurial life style is like riding a roller coaster. There are as many ups as there are downs. The secret in my opinion is consistency. As soon as you drop the ball more than once, you will find yourself in downward spiral that can be difficult to survive.
Continued success is dependent on your clients and how often you are engaged with their creative success.
The struggles arrive when clients aren’t knocking on your door, but the landlord is.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m know for a couple of things. As a visual artist, I am know for my graffiti work. I was mentioned in 3 sections of the monumental book “ The History of American Graffiti” and cited in Complex magazine’s article on “Chicago’s Most Influential Graffiti Artist. Me and my crew were know for creating unique and playful murals around the city of Chicago.
As a DJ, music producer and sound engineer, I am known for working with the independent music scene in New York in the late 90s to present. I’ve collaborated with many great artists like Just Ice, KRS One, Kool Keith, T La Tock, Mike Ladd, Rob Sonic, Preservation and the list goes on and on. I have traveled the world with some of these acts and have created incredible music with them as well. My vision, when working collaboratively is to always find the strength in the people you are working with as well as yourself and find ways to bring that strength to the forefront while hold egos at bay.
I’m proud of most of my work, it’s hard to pick one thing out of all that I’ve done.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Be patient and believe in yourself. Always be critical of what you are working on while setting your ego aside. Never half *ss a job…you never know who will see or hear it, and first impressions in the art world can make or break an opportunity.
