Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Frederique.
Hi Gary, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstories.
I always had a passion for writing and never returned to it until the pandemic. It started as just writing stories in my notepad app on my phone. I would write every day about different topics and characters until one day. I was like oh, these stories are interesting, funny, sad, and plot-twisting. I gave some of the stories to my wife to read, and she loved them. So, I gave a friend to read, and she also loved it. And then I gave it to my sister, and she loved it. And so I gathered some of the stories, compiled them into a book, and called it “He Might Be Lying.” Self-published the book on the Kindle direct publishing platform and started to market online. I had a good response with sales and feedback. During this journey, I have learned a lot about marketing online and finding your audience. I am still learning and loving this journey I am in.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Editing your book was a great task; although I did it myself, I recommend having a professional do it. It took work! After releasing the book and it went live, I had to edit the book 5 times due to some errors I needed to catch myself. Formatting your book was also a struggle for me as I had to look up many YouTube videos and editorials on the subject matter. And last but not least, marketing your book! This book is my passion, and I want as many readers as possible, so all forms of marketing are needed to include word of mouth! There is a story in there for everyone!
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a writer at heart and have always been! My tenacity in anything I do is what sets me apart from others. I love telling stories, and right now focused on putting these stories on paper to share. My background is military veteran, sales, auto injury claims adjuster, and police officer. I held many roles and was successful in all, but now I am focused on being a writer and creator full-time and working towards that goal. I will be a known writer soon, and my book will grace many readers.
We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
In my younger years, I took risks because I had very little responsibility. I was single and just finding my way in life, so many decisions would only affect me and maybe my immediate family(parents and siblings). Now as a husband with 3 kids(one is 21), I have a great responsibility to take care of my family; therefore, taking risks is very calculated. My basics, including food, shelter, and clothing, must always be covered. I never want my family to feel they are not being provided for. Taking risks is necessary to reach your goals, but do not sacrifice your family’s quality of life to reach your personal goal. Take steps in your journey, be mindful of your supporters, and be kind. Everyone’s journey is different.
