Today we’d like to introduce you to George Whitten.
George, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a young guy growing up in Charlotte, NC I became extremely interested in football. Just like so many young athletes, my wish was to make it to the big league one day. I became interested in physical fitness to become stronger for football, even though my mother was completely against me playing. At a young age learning about physical fitness would consume hours of my time. I will never forget asking my mom to buy this program to help me build muscles. I was able to convince my mom to allow me to play football. I had a lot of fun playing high school and college football with many incredible memories. My thirst for and understanding of how the human body moves continued to grow and many years later after several college degrees and working professionally, I found my happy place in fitness. I run a small fitness studio in Raleigh, NC. We offer personal training, group fitness and karate. With my background and experience, I could run the daily operations of a larger facility, but I enjoy the personable feel and touch of a small studio. My goal is to help every person I meet live life to the fullest, that is the reason I named the company Fitness4Life. It encompasses all aspects of mental and physical growth and development. I have 20 plus years of experience as a trainer, and I wake up every day asking for the opportunity to touch someone’s life today.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I have helped others with workout plans since my high school days. After graduating from college with a Computer Science degree, I felt compelled to work as an engineer. It did not take long for my co-workers to learn about my background and passion for fitness. I was repeatedly asked to help them with their workouts and losing weight. It never dawned on me that I could make money this way until a co-worker offered to pay me. I was in amazed by her proposal. That is when I learned about persona training as a career. I immediately became certified and started working with clients on a part-time basis. Now, I had to decide, do I continue working as an engineer with the comfort of salary, benefits and security or do I follow my passion. I fought that decision for years and try to manage both careers for many years. After being laid off as an engineer, the decision became easier. Oh, and by the way, yes, I took my co-worker up on the proposal and that was the first time I was paid as a trainer.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Fitness4Life?
The company was created through my passion for my personal life and helping others experience a better lifestyle. I fully understand that wellness includes so many different components and as a professional, I had to make sure my clients embrace this concept. The name Fitness4Life was created with that in mind, help every client develop the right life plan for them. It goes beyond building muscles, getting stronger, running faster, losing weight or feeling better physically, you must include mental and nutritional wellness. Again, that is the reason I opened a small studio, so I get to know every client I work with. It does not matter is I am working with someone privately or in a group, they all get individualized attention. We offer personal training for individuals or small groups, group fitness classes, corporate wellness seminars, women self-defense seminars and karate. I have clients that have worked with me for over 12 years and the main reason is the personal attention they receive, and they know they can count on Fitness4LIfe.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The fitness industry is always turning over new products, ideas and exercise modalities. With the current pandemic, we are dealing with most of my personal training and group fitness has transition to online training. The industry was heading in the direction of more online personal training, but the pandemic creates an incredible virtual training opportunity. I have been able to expand my reach outside of North Carolina. Clients who trained with me for years moved away and are now training with me again virtually. My opinion, virtual training does not compare to face-to-face, however I’m able to work with a lot of my business clients when they travel, so virtual training has proven to be very beneficial and it’s here to stay.
