Meet Heather Sutton of Holly Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Sutton.

Hi Heather, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started baking as a hobby, developing my own recipes and giving away treats to my friends. My grandma’s sweet potato pie is the inspiration for our signature flavor, sweet potato cake. My grandma’s recipe was ‘a little of this, a little of that,’ and when I tried to duplicate it, it turned out so well.

As my love for baking grew, I found myself buying flour and sugar 25lbs at a time. My husband insisted this was no longer just a hobby and encouraged me to pursue starting a business. I started baking small cakes for friends and neighbors from our certified home kitchen and then decided to partner with some friends that were opening a coffee shop locally. We provided scones, muffins, sweet potato donuts and other treats for them daily and continued to grow the cupcake and cake making side of the business since that was my passion. We were then discovered by a local wedding venue and invited to be their pastry chef, providing all of the wedding cakes for their clients. All of this growth meant that we had outgrown our modest kitchen space within the coffee shop and we decided to open up our own storefront in Holly Springs.

Today we still focus on giving good things away. Bestow Baked Goods specializes in gifts and gatherings. That feeling you get when you give someone a gift you know they’ll love – that’s what we want our customers to experience every time they serve a cupcake at a birthday party or a slice of cake at a wedding. We want to share the goodness that we have received with others and empower our customers and team members to do the same.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We began construction on our storefront in January 2020. COVID complicated the build out and running the business in many ways, but we managed to get the doors open in July 2020. Amid rising prices, a difficult hiring market and various other challenges we’ve still had so much support from our community for which we are incredibly grateful!

As with starting any new venture, there have been many learning experiences but overall, we are blessed and enjoying sharing treats with our community.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We specialize in custom, all buttercream cake designs for all occasions. We also offer a variety of baked goods such as cookies, cupcakes and muffins. We were recently voted the (second) best chocolate chip cookie in the Triangle and we’re pretty proud of that!

It is such an honor to be included in all of the special moments in peoples’ lives whether it be a one of a kind wedding cake, an adorable cake for a baby shower, or a custom birthday cake. Customers often allow us the opportunity to celebrate with them throughout the years as they go through life. It’s a testament to how food connects us and allows us to share goodness with others.

How do you think about happiness?
The thing I enjoy most about baking is being able to give it as a gift. We choose the name Bestow, which means to convey as a gift. It’s a way to connect with people, and that is important to us.
