Meet Hepston Henry of A Little Love Seasoning

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hepston Henry.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My parents would always make their own seasoning and spice rubs for as long as I can remember, and store them in mason jars. When I went off to college, I had some and would often cook for my friends. They always asked for some of the seasonings and I would just give it away. They constantly said, “Man, you need to sell this. I’d buy it!”

I made a small batch of 12 of my All-Purpose seasoning and sold three or four at work. I gave the rest to my wife and asked her to sell them at her job. By lunchtime, she sold out. So we tried it again a few days later and sold out again! Finally, in July 2019, my wife and I ventured out into making this a business. As of today, we have released over 20 different blends.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has definitely not been smooth. When we first started, we used plastic bags since it was cheaper. But it took so much time to fill the bags, add the label, add a decorative ribbon, wipe off any excess seasoning to make sure the bag would close.

It was grueling. I hand-mix all of my blends as well, so it takes a couple of hours. Juggling a full-time job and still making time for your passion is not an easy road. However, when it’s something you love, it doesn’t seem like work!

We’ve been impressed with A Little Love Seasoning, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
A Little Love Seasoning (A.L.L. Seasoning) is run by me and my wife. Our mission is to fully accentuate the natural flavors of every food by providing simple West Indian fusion spice blends that expand the palate and encourage ALL to cook.

My mother is from St. Croix and my father is from Jamaica, so I wanted to bring some of the West Indian cultures to as many households as possible. We have shipped out orders to almost all 50 states, and have just recently begun shipping internationally.

Cooking is not as difficult as some may think. You need the right temperature, the right time, and the right seasoning. The first two come with trial and error but the last… with A.L.L. Seasoning you can never go wrong. I made it a point to ensure all of my blends are low in sodium with no preservatives or additives.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My parents deserve most of the credit. When I was a kid, I learned to cook at a young age, and I enjoyed it. Today, I use them as my test subjects for new blends. I always send it to the first to see how they like it, then go from there.

Last but not least is my wife. She and I started this business together and she is definitely my biggest supporter.
