Meet Juan Spies of Raleigh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Spies

Hi Juan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started as a photographer like any other that took photos of random things. I didn’t have a niche as I was still figuring out what made me want to take photos. Some of my friends and I went into a bar late at night with neon lights and a lighter, took a photo and it changed everything. I won a yearbook contest, and ever since, I’ve been fascinated by nighttime photography!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Well it has definitely not been a smooth road. There’s been times where I’ve taken almost an entire year off from burning out and not knowing what photos to take. One thing that has helped me though is to not think or plan, and just go with the flow. My photos always come out better when I don’t plan anything.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
So I’m an artificial light photographer. I do not use sunlight almost at all and strictly use artificial LEDs ranging from red, blue, green, orange etc. I am known for taking these basic colors and turning them into more than just a photo, but more of an eye catcher. Speaking of, fire is one of those artificial lights. I pretty much lit myself on fire to get an eye catching photo, which I definitely would not recommend doing at home. I feel like stuff like that sets me apart from others, taking the leap to do something nobody else would do.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Friends. Friends make me happy. They’ve always pushed me to do my best. Many of my friends have even been my models in most situations.
