Meet Karla Fisher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Fisher.

Hi Karla, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am currently a SAHM, Family/Lifestyle and Portrait Photographer @karlafisherphotography, as well as I oversee @thefisherhouse_, a DIY/Decor account. For 15+ years, I was an ER nurse as well as worked in Oncology. After having our first son in November of 2019, we realized that staying home would be our best option as a family.

It wasn’t until then that I truly started discovering my inner creative passions when it comes to photography and our home. I knew that I loved photography and would always be “that” family member with a camera in tow everywhere we went, but stepping into the professional side has been such a huge blessing. I never realized how much a photograph means until having a child of my own. There is something so bittersweet about the seasons of babies, toddlers and the transition of a child to adulthood that just screams to be documented no matter what. I know the impact a photograph can have for generations to come. I’ve also learned in having a home/DIY account the techniques and strategies of inside natural light photography.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
But with all that said, starting a business just a few months before a pandemic has had its challenges. I am realizing that growth takes time… in all aspects of life, especially when starting a business. I continue to use my most treasured clients, my husband and now 18 months old, as the best photography teachers when it comes to posing and lighting strategies. Learning, stretching my knowledge and stepping out of the box will always be pivotal points as a photographer. I also have to remind myself that having a calendar full of bookings doesn’t necessarily mean I am growing. I never want to settle. I want to continue stretching my knowledge of photography, And can’t wait to see where I will be 5, 10 or 15 years down the road.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am currently focused on family, infant, maternity, lifestyle and portrait photography. But have ambitions to start non-profit photography work as well as real estate photography.

I am most proud of my ability to connect a picture to a feeling. I pride myself in meeting my clients and families where they are and truly capturing their personalities, quirks and life. It’s a beautiful feeling to tangibly feel an emotion through a portrait.

What I feel that sets me apart from others is my love for Jesus and wanting that to shine through my every move. Delivering a beautiful gallery of photographs is wonderful, but leaving people feeling more loved, treasured and seen, means more to me than anything. That’s my goal above a beautiful photograph, because if I can do that, the beautiful pictures are right there behind It!!!

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Having grown up outside of Raleigh and still currently resided just 20 miles south, I love the diversity and availability to so many outdoor activities, restaurants, museums, venues and landscapes. There is never-ending to some of the most beautiful backdrops as a photographer. I feel so blessed to have the best of both worlds when it comes to the city or the country.
