Meet Karoll Kuri of Raleigh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karoll Kuri.

Hi Karoll , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Meraki Creative Agency started from something very personal for me—it grew out of my creativity and my desire to help people bring their vision to life.

I’ve always been drawn to branding, storytelling, design, and creating experiences that make people feel something. Even while working in corporate, nonprofit, and public sector roles, I found myself naturally helping people with marketing, event design, social media, and brand strategy. Friends, small business owners, and organizations kept coming to me asking for help with logos, campaigns, content, and event activations.

At first, it was just side projects—helping with branding, creative direction, and even event installations like balloon décor and experiential setups. But over time, I realized this was more than a hobby. It was something I genuinely loved and was good at.

The name Meraki really reflects the heart of the business. Meraki is a Greek word that means putting a piece of your soul, creativity, and love into your work. That resonated deeply with me because that’s exactly how I approach everything I create—I don’t believe in doing things halfway.

What started as a creative outlet slowly evolved into a full creative agency focused on branding, public relations, social media, marketing strategy, and experiential activations. My background in the United States Army, nonprofit leadership, and corporate communications gave me a unique perspective: I learned how to combine creativity with strategy, structure, and execution.

Today, Meraki is an extension of who I am—creative but strategic, bold but intentional. It’s about helping brands tell authentic stories, connect with people, and create lasting impact. For me, it has never been just about making things look good; it’s about building something meaningful.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road—and honestly, that’s part of what makes Meraki so meaningful to me.

Meraki started small, literally from my house. In the beginning, I was creating, planning, designing, and meeting clients while working around family life, a full-time career, and everything else life was throwing at me. My dining table became a workspace, inventory room, design station, and brainstorming hub all at once. There were boxes, balloons, supplies, laptops—creative chaos everywhere.

One of the biggest struggles early on was believing in myself enough to fully own what I was building. When something comes naturally to you, it’s easy to minimize it and think, “Everyone can do this.” I had to learn that creativity, strategy, and vision are real skills—and that my work had value.

As Meraki grew, we outgrew the house and eventually moved into a downtown shop. That was a huge milestone for me. Walking into a space with our name on it felt surreal because it represented so much more than just a storefront—it represented sacrifice, long nights, risk, faith, and a lot of hard work. It was proof that something that started with just an idea at home had become real.

But growth came with new challenges too. A shop meant overhead, rent, more pressure, and bigger expectations. I had to learn how to manage scaling a business while still protecting the creative heart behind it. There were moments of burnout, financial stress, and questioning whether I was doing the right thing.

I was also juggling a lot personally—career transitions, military life, motherhood, school, and relocations. There were seasons where Meraki had to slow down because life needed more of me somewhere else. That was hard because as entrepreneurs we sometimes feel like slowing down means failing, but I learned that’s not true.

What kept me going was purpose. Meraki was never just about design or pretty branding for me. It was about helping people bring their vision to life and building something with intention and soul. That’s why the name Meraki means so much to me—it means putting a piece of yourself into your work, and that’s exactly what I’ve done.

Looking back, the road was messy, beautiful, exhausting, and rewarding all at once. But every challenge made me stronger, wiser, and more grounded in who I am as both a business owner and a woman.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work is centered around creating experiences people remember. Through Meraki Creative Agency, I specialize in luxury balloon design, large-scale creative installations, and event styling that transform ordinary spaces into something immersive and memorable.

What started as balloon décor evolved into something much bigger. Today, we design custom installations for corporate events, festivals, universities, private celebrations, brand activations, and community experiences. I specialize in organic balloon structures, statement backdrops, photo moments, branded activations, and large installations that help tell a story visually.

I’m especially known for taking a client’s vision—even if it’s just a rough idea—and turning it into something elevated, intentional, and impactful. I have a strong eye for design, scale, and spatial storytelling, so I naturally see how a space can be transformed before anything is even built.

One of the things I’m most proud of is the work we’ve done in the community, especially with the Dogwood Festival. Being part of such a beloved local tradition and creating installations that people stop, photograph, and remember has been incredibly rewarding. I love knowing our work becomes part of people’s memories.

I’m also proud of our partnerships with colleges and universities. Creating installations for campuses means designing experiences that energize students and bring communities together—whether it’s welcome events, graduations, recruitment activations, or special celebrations. There’s something special about creating moments that make people feel excited and connected.

What sets me apart is that I don’t just “decorate.” I design with intention. Anyone can put balloons together, but I focus on composition, movement, texture, color theory, branding, and the emotional experience behind the installation. Every build is custom and every detail has purpose.

I think my background also makes me different. My experience in the United States Army, business, public relations, and leadership gives me a rare balance of creativity and execution. I can dream big creatively, but I also know how to manage logistics, timelines, budgets, and client expectations under pressure.

What I’m most proud of is that Meraki was built from the ground up—with passion, grit, and heart. We went from creating out of my home to operating out of a downtown shop and building a brand people recognize and trust. That journey means everything to me.

At the end of the day, what makes Meraki different is simple: we create with soul. The name Meraki means putting a piece of yourself into your work, and that’s exactly what we do with every install. We’re not just creating balloon displays—we’re creating moments, experiences, and memories.

Any big plans?
For Meraki, my vision is to continue growing beyond traditional balloon décor and expand more into large-scale creative installations, brand activations, and experiential design. I want Meraki to be known not just for beautiful balloon work, but for transforming spaces and creating unforgettable experiences for businesses, communities, universities, and large events. I see us taking on bigger projects, more corporate partnerships, and eventually becoming a go-to creative agency for immersive event design.

I’m also excited about expanding into new markets, especially in Texas. Moving opens the door to new opportunities, new collaborations, and a much larger market for creative work.
