Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Greene.
Hi Katherine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always loved doing hair and make-up in general. I used to work as an esthetician and still love being in the spa/salon environment. I started doing Fairy Hair in 2017 for friends and family. As the demand for Fairy Hair increased, I started popping up at local farmers markets and eventually made my way into (air conditioned!) local businesses. I love being inside of coffee shops, gift stores and breweries. Supporting small, local businesses has been a goal of mine from the start and I am very thankful for the relationships I now have with other entrepreneurs. Our local community responded enthusiastically to these hair sparkles and Fairy Hair For All transformed into a wonderful team of women working along the East Coast of the Carolinas- from Wilmington NC to Charleston SC!
My mission has always been to spread joy and see people smile. Fairy Hair quickly became a source of happiness, purpose and stable income. It is fun, quick, durable and a bit addictive! With the support of my whole team, we have been able to expand into other areas of the world. I recently connected with members of The North American Energy Markets Association (NAEMA) and have since traveled to Vail, Colorado and will be joining their conference in Montreal this May!
Along with our North and South Carolina “Fairies”, we have a Fairy in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica and one in training in Berlin, Germany! As of today, we are a team of thirteen women across the world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In August of 2024, we received an email with a warning from the NC Board of Cosmetic Arts saying that in order to continue sparkling, we needed to obtain a license in hair care and a licensed salon. We were no longer allowed to operate out of small businesses around town. I spoke with multiple attorneys and with the Board of Cosmetic Arts many times. They all agreed that we all needed a license in order to continue working. This was truly, truly devastating to my whole team and business. I lost employees, friends, clients, money and my mind for a while during this transition. I offered everyone on my team a spot in a Natural Hair Care program in Whiteville NC. My best friend Meg and I were the only two able to make the time commitment, so we went back to school together and are now licensed Natural Hair Care Specialists! Kelly Benoit, a long time fairy of ours, already had her cosmetology license and carried our entire client load in her own salon for 6 months during this time.
While we were in school for Natural Hair Care, we were also searching for and eventually decorating our Salon Suite! We hope our clients feel lighter and happier when they walk into our space. We have pink walls, a pink fridge, clouds hanging from the ceiling, flowers and crystals everywhere! We just celebrated one year in our new Sola Salon Suite.
As of May 2026, the laws in North Carolina have once again changed and we are looking at completely restructuring our business model. We are officially allowed to operate outside of our salon again! This news was bittersweet, as we complied with all NC regulations two years ago and turned our business upside down to meet their standards. After the board reviewed Fairy Hair as a service, they decided it is not a service they need to regulate anymore.
The confusion and loss of income surrounding the legislation from the Board of Cosmetic Arts was one of the worst times of my life. That was an enormous struggle from which we still have not completely recovered. The past two years have been complete chaos in our world, but we are excited to be back in local businesses and bringing joy to birthday parties again!
This business and my team make every dream of mine come true. They are creative, loyal, kind, responsible and passionate about Fairy Hair. I am so thankful for the support along the way and all of the friendships created through the past 9 years.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Fairy Hair For All…

Personalities
Fairy Hair For All specializes in Fairy Hair- also called hair tinsel, angel hair, mermaid hair! My Dad calls it Happy Hair 🙂
We use professional quality sparkling strands to tie in with your own hair. You choose the color and amount of sparkles and we tie them in using a tiny tool we like to call a Pixie Pick. We tie one Fairy Hair and one of your own hairs in a knot together. The Fairy Hair sheds whenever your hair falls out naturally- it could be a couple of days or even months! Its not unusual for adults to keep a few of those sparkles for 6 months-1 year.
There are a few other methods to install fairy hair, like using a bead or tying the strands with your hands. Both of these involve multiple hairs and can be uncomfortable when brushing. We have found our method to be the longest lasting, most reliable way of tying the fairy hair in!
This is a great service for anyone who needs a little but of fun in their life! Its like jewelry for your hair.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Growing up on Wrightsville Beach! Swimming with my sisters, watching the sunrise over the ocean, riding my bike around the island. That beach has my heart.
