Meet Kay Bandzz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Bandzz.

Hi Kay, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Music has always been a part of my life… since I was born I grew up in my grandparent’s church listening to my father play the keyboard and my mother sing. Eventually, as I got older, around 8 years old, I started playing around on the piano and singing in church. My grandfather had a piano in his house and so whenever I and my brother would spend the night my grandfather would teach me a few things.

The first song that I distinctly remember learning first was a childhood favorite “Are you Sleeping” and ever since then I’ve become accustomed to learning more and more about music; so far I know how to play the keyboard, bass guitar, and saxophone.

During my junior year of high school, I started to learn how to create beats using my phone. At the time, I used Bandlab and GarageBand, to the day, I still do! I am now a junior in college and I am pushing forward with my music career hoping to inspire others to face adversity and follow their passions!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Most of my struggles come from financial instability.

My parents divorced when I was 8 years old and so I didn’t have many resources to get involved in music as much as I would have liked to when I was younger. LOL, when I went to college my freshman year, I was a broke 1st generation college student living on campus trying to find my way.

Even then I’d always surround myself with those who ventured into the music world, my dad being one of those main persons. Now that it is my junior year, I am grateful to be able to have the support of my mother, she is the reason why I am able to have an in-home recording studio as I continue my last year of college.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
To start off I am a musician, there are singers, rappers, producers, etc, however, I define myself as such because there is no one-way path that I take to perfect my craft. I’ve spent years developing my craft in order to be what it has become so far, and there is so much more growth that I can achieve, so much more that I have to learn.

I have produced beats, written songs, filmed/edited videos, and marketed content for myself over the past year. On top of branding myself, I work part-time, and I am a dog mom and a full-time student. I would say that I put in a lot of effort to ensure that my work is the best quality that it can be.

I am most proud of the amount of growth that I accumulated since I first started becoming interested in music, although I recently began to take it seriously a little more recently, those small steps that I took in the past have given me the confidence and voice that I need in order to define who I am.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as achieving your goals and continuing to set and achieve new ones. The only way to succeed is to continue to do better than you did yesterday!
