Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenny Williams.
Hi Kenny, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started in the garage of my home just working with my son. The plan wasn’t to start a boxing and fitness center..lol. A barber in the barbershop that I visited at the time would ask me to train him after seeing my work with my son one day. I told him no for years. Then he came to me one day in the shop, told me he was adopting his nephew who he never met before and needed as much help with him as he can get. I agreed to meet them one evening after work for an hour. After working with them, he gave me $40 for it.
That started the wheels rolling ..lol. A few months later, I started a program at a local rec center. From there I went on to get the head coaching job at Second Round (a program under Haven House’s banner) working with as risk youth. I enjoyed every second. Three years later I decided to rent out a small 1200 square feet building to give some of my more competitive guys and girls more time. We grew tremendously in a year. Now we’re in a 4,000 sq ft center with over 120 members!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been smooth at all. I eventually quit my full-time job to pursue this. The head coach job at Second Round was a 15 hour a week job that paid me $13 dollars an hour. At the time my wife had the tremendous burden of carrying much of the financial weight for our family. I Ubered late nights and took any odd jobs I could to keep pursuing this. I’m surprised my wife didn’t leave me..lol. I dealt with close friends and family not believing I would be where I am today (which was hardest for me). I had a very comfortable job that I left. The quality of life for my family changed big time! Initially, it would have been easy to quit and go back to a regular 9 to 5.
We’ve been impressed with Pride Boxing and Fitness, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Pride is a family-owned, family-friendly business committed to helping our members reach their fitness goals. We are an authentic, inclusive fight gym providing intensive, class-based training for people of all backgrounds and levels. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or simply looking for a better workout, we’ll help you get in the best shape of your life. Pride is proof of the benefits of boxing! Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I have a passion to love on and encourage people. It comes from a place of being an underdog and counted out myself. My mom was 14 years old when she had me, so the road was long and tough for me. I love giving people what I felt I missed out on most of my life!
