Meet Ki Campbell of Durham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ki Campbell.

Hi Ki, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
So when I graduated high school in 2015 my family moved to Florida. I had already gotten accepted into NCA&T and I was going to attend that fall. I quick decided that I didn’t want to be away from my family so i moved to Florida that summer. I knew that I didn’t just want to work a regular job so I decided to attend a community college while living in Florida and I was enrolled in the dental assistant program. Well that was short lived and I actually wasn’t enjoying florida at the time and being away from my friends. I moved back to NC in the beginning of 2016 and made the decision to attend hair school. I started off at Aveda institute in chapel hill at age 18 back in 2016, while in school I was working at a salon in Durham my, it took me 13 months to get my certification. I graduated in 2017 and immediately started working at a commission based salon for 4 years. I learned so much about hair and I was able to build my clientele also while working there. During Covid I did some soul searching and decided to open my own salon suite in 2021. I was so scared to just jump out and go off on my own durning a hard time for everyone. And I didn’t know if salons would stay open or shut down again, but I took a leap of faith. Flash forward to now March of 2025 i decided that it was time for a change( I am realizing a pattern here every 4 years) I have relocated to a new location and have become way more active on social media and making content. I’m thriving more than ever in my new salon and I have gotten new clients and love my returning clients!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being in the industry had its own ups and downs. Over the past 9 years I have definitely grown and matured behind the chair. At first I would just take any client that reached out to me, no matter if they had long or short hair, damaged or healthy hair, virgin or color treated hair. Now I am very selective about who sits in my chair and my main goal is for your hair to look and feel better than when you came in. I am super confident in the work that I put out and I definitely look at my clients as my walking billboards. I have changed so much in how I execute services now a days that I feel like it’s been pretty smooth lately!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Hello I am Ki and my business it’s Ki’s Kreations. I have been in the industry for a total of 9 years. I specialize in color, from lived-in to reds to fashion color! I love working with natural texted hair and transforming it, weather it’s defining it’s natural curl or making it sleek and smooth. I am currently really into bouncy blowouts and layered cuts. I like to say that I do well at keep up with the latest hair trends. I always want my clients to feel like they are getting the latest and greatest hair services. I do continues education and I have also dove a little into teaching classes myself. I am super amazed at how I able to be a full time single mother and run a small business all the while making sure I am taken care of also!

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was always super hyper and energetic. I have always been a creative, from drawing and painting and also cooking. I am into all aspects of art and I love transforming things into something new and better than it was before! I can look at something an immediately think of a new and interesting way to make in better. When I was a kid I would always rearrange my bedroom and try to think of ways ti make it look cooler and more functional. I remember when I was in 5th grade I was looking in the mirror and I thought ti myself “I wonder what I would look like with short hair.” So I yelled to mom in the next room that I want to cut my hair. I put my hair in a ponytail and immediately chopped it off. She was so shocked and all I would do was laugh. Of course it was crooked and looked like some sort of Bob, but I loved and that pretty much sums me up as a person.
