Today we’d like to introduce you to Kylie Douglas.
Hi Kylie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I graduated from college & started a two-year career in the wedding & events industry in Columbus, Ohio. I loved what I did for a long time, & then I began to realize it wasn’t what I saw myself doing for the rest of my life. I started thinking about what would feel more fulfilling, what would excite me every day to go to work & do, & if that career path was connected to what I was doing at the time. After months of soul-searching & trying to understand the next steps in my professional life, I decided to enroll in esthetics school, leave the wedding industry behind, & become a licensed esthetician. I had loved skincare for years & was the go-to person in my friend group for all things skin. I was constantly watching videos, reading books, & following social media content surrounding the skincare industry – so I jumped! I worked at a facial bar in Columbus for about 9 months before I moved to Charlotte. I had an incredible client base there & learned so much about being an esthetician. It was the perfect place to start my career & gave me the industry confidence to start my own business in Charlotte – Kylie Anne Esthetics! I am the owner & sole esthetician in my esthetics suite & I love this new chapter as a business owner!
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Starting a business in a new city, in a state I have never lived in right after moving here has come with some challenges. Building clientele at the same time as navigating what it means to own a business & provide for myself in a way I’ve never experienced before has had its hard days. It has also pushed me to be outgoing, join groups & local organizations, & get my name out there. Social media also has its challenges. It is a large part of advertising & keeping current & future clients connected to your brand. Algorithm changes, posting schedules, organizing content in effective & engaging ways – it’s all been a new experience that has come with learning curves.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a North Carolina licensed esthetician & owner of Kylie Anne Esthetics. I specialize in custom facial treatments, dermaplaning, creating an at-home skincare routine (or putting a new spin on the one you already have!), & brow services. I also work with clients not local to the Charlotte area through virtual consultation services. My business is in a private esthetics treatment room in Salon Plaza – Matthews. The feeling & vibe of my business is relaxing but upbeat; I don’t play traditional spa music & I love to chat with clients during appointments. You’ll hear a mix of mellow Giveon & Sam Smith, with some Lauv & John Mayer thrown into the playlist. If you want to learn about each step & ingredient in your facial service, we can chat about that! If you want to have a quiet appointment & escape for an hour of relaxation, we can do that too! I hope to provide a kind, comfortable, calming, vibrant environment to learn about skincare, where you leave with glowing skin each appointment, excited to return next month. Connections with clients are so important to me! I love having open communication with my clients – I tell them at the end of each appointment to feel free to reach out with any skincare questions or concerns post-appointment & I mean that! I get to educate & empower my clients to help them live in their best skin, no matter what stage of their skincare journey, & that is the kind of career I have always dreamed of. Being able to provide skincare services that can be a change in someone’s life or working with clients to maintain skin progress is one of my favorite parts of what I do at Kylie Anne Esthetics.
Do you have any advice for those just starting?
I have been open since November 14, 2022, so I am still at the beginning of business ownership. I have had a lot of amazing mentors from the esthetics space in Columbus who I’ve been able to lean on, ask questions to, & bounce ideas off of during these early months. I recommend creating relationships with others in your industry, especially those who have more experience & knowledge, so that you can grow & learn from their mentorship. I am grateful beyond words for the mentorship & friendship of those women who helped guide me at the beginning of my career.
