Today we’d like to introduce you to Levi Christopher.
Hi Levi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Indie Rock Catalog was started on June 9, 2024, when friends Levi Christopher and Alejandro Benitez went kayaking together at Robertson Millpond Preserve (just outside of Raleigh).
There was a conversation that started with “Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a place that served as a music venue, recording studio, record shop and merch store, and community space?” You know, the kind of stuff that two dudes who love indie rock would spend time seriously talking about. We called this the dream – this magical place in the Raleigh area could be the goal to strive for.
Then, there was the question of “What’s the first tangible step we could take towards this goal?” Everything we have discussed, done, and planned for over the last year – everything you see – is a result of this conversation from this fateful afternoon.
Indie Rock Catalog is here to tell the story of independent artists.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Both of us have day jobs and full lives, so we’ve developed Indie Rock Catalog at an easy and controlled pace. This has helped keep things fun and manageable, but has made for a longer process of seeing what works for us. At the beginning of our journey of just trying to act on this idea, we asked each other “what exactly do we do?” several times. We weren’t sure if we were aspiring YouTubers, podcasters, journalists, or record label founders, so we threw a lot of ideas at the wall to discover what we felt best about bringing to an audience.
Nothing’s off the table for us, but right now we’re focused on producing the Indie Rock Catalog podcast and doing more to support the local music scene in Raleigh. We have great conversations with every guest of ours, we believe in creating a space for artists and music fans to talk about everything related to loving music, and we love staying connected to the brilliant local music scene.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Our work takes more than one form – we produce a podcast, create short videos to promote local shows, and most recently, we partnered with our friend, Joel Fitzgerald from 4-Track Records, to record a mixtape of local artists in Raleigh. You can listen to the mixtape on our Bandcamp (indierockcatalog.bandcamp.com).
The next frontier is our first live podcast and show coming up on June 7th at Neptunes Parlour, where an audience will get to hear a live curated discussion and interview, followed by an amazing combo of a lineup – The Pseudo Cowboys and Story Charlemagne!
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
While the two of us have really connected on music and creating Indie Rock Catalog over the last year, we’ve actually known each other for almost 10 years!
Also, for everyone wondering – yes, we purposefully always wear plain black T-shirts when filming. Before we had anything more than our agreement of this being a cool idea, we said that we wanted anything and everything Indie Rock Catalog did to put the music and the artists first, all the way down to our plain white background and plain black T-shirts.
