Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorena Malm.
Hi Lorena, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am self taught with a passion for many kinds of art. At nine years old, I discovered my love
for art in the form of a paint by number oil set, gifted from my parents. As I painted each
day, I learned patience was not something I had, but must develop, and my perfectionism
became obvious for the first time, bringing with it a sense of desire to go “outside the lines.”
I have been duplicating those feelings by composing my own form of art, one without
boundaries or rules set before me. Abstract has given me the freedom to create my own
lines. The images I create come from life experiences, memories, emotions, and
sometimes from my dreams. I embed my emotions into the Art, with intention to present a
connection to the viewer, that they too will feel emotion and connected to an otherwise abstract tangible.It is my
express desire to share with my viewers a world of beauty through Art.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Leaving Oregon was a bold leap toward my independence, a necessary step to prove that art was a true calling rather than just a phase. Settling in Illinois brought the thrill of a fresh start, even if the Midwestern winter and a tight budget tested my resolve. When high-quality canvases proved too expensive, I channeled my resourcefulness into painting on 4′ x 8′ Masonite boards, slicing them down into unique, rustic panels that actually added character to the work. Every long hour spent working the day job became fuel for my ambition, turning financial hurdles into a masterclass in grit. During the quiet nights, when occasional waves of self-doubt crept in, I used that nervous energy to push the boundaries on the canvas. I reframed the challenges not as signs of failure, but as the classic origin story of an artist finding her unique voice. My determination and resilience quickly paid off when I discovered the vibrant Illinois art scene. Immersing myself in community groups, street markets, and gallery openings, I found an incredibly welcoming community of fellow creators. This new network of friends celebrated talent and offered constructive feedback that pushed my skills to new heights. Surrounded by people who genuinely understood and appreciated my vision, I built a chosen family that turned my new city into a warm, collaborative sanctuary of endless creative possibility.

While my main focus has been oil painting of abstract work, I have expanded my artistic inventory by integrating digital art into my repertoire, creating a world of whimsical and pensive images of fairies, familiar landscapes, and subjects the viewer can relate to and connect with. I am best known for my passion for Art and supporting Art, Artists, and Community. I am so proud to have the ability to donate my Art that does not sell to those in need.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
To see where my Art is going over the next 5 -10 years, I would have to say…at my age, I cannot be sure. One big shift has already taken place as I retired from the position of Operations Manager at the NCI ARTworks Gallery to spend more time with my sweetheart. I am still actively creating and exhibiting, but will also do more traveling to see the beautiful land of America.
