Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Alvira.
Hi Mariah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Ever since I can remember, I always had a passion for makeup and expressing myself. I would steal my mom’s or grandma’s makeup and have fun! At age 15, I began perfecting my makeup skills and started freelancing for special events such as proms and Sweet 16s.
Before entering college, I started my Instagram account, @mariahalysemakeup, where I showcased my makeup skills through reviews, tutorials, and pictures. Simultaneously, I started posting on YouTube as well.
I attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, where I obtained my Bachelor’s in Cosmetics & Fragrance Marketing. Here, I learned about the beauty industry in-depth and dove deeper into my passion for beauty.
In 2021, I had a 6-month internship at IL Makiage, a well-known makeup brand, as their social media intern. After graduating from college in May of 2021, I obtained my first full-time job in the beauty industry. While working a full-time job, I consistently create my own beauty content on social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
All of my previous experiences freelancing, obtaining a degree in beauty, and gaining experience through companies and my personal social media accounts, I have developed my knowledge of social media and beauty to get me to where I am today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Along the way, there have been many difficulties with the ever-changing social media platforms as a creator. Perfecting content on Instagram is always changing as the algorithm changes and it is crucial to stay on top of these changes for reach and engagement.
Now, Instagram prioritizes video content and it is important as a creator to quickly change strategy to accommodate for these algorithm adjustments. Additionally, the beauty industry is always changing in terms of trends. With the start of the pandemic, there was a shift from glam makeup to makeup that is very natural and skin-focused.
It is important to keep up with the trends and create content that is helpful to what followers are interested in seeing. The quick changes of social media platforms and trends are exciting, but can also be the gateway to many struggles if you are unable to keep up.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create beauty content on social media platforms with a focus on teaching and reviewing products for my followers to gain honest feedback that can be useful to them. I aim to inspire others to feel beautiful and express themselves authentically.
I love to create quality content to keep my followers learning about makeup, hair, or skincare. I am proud of my content creation skills that have allowed me to get reposted by big brands such as One Size Beauty, Garnier, Skinfix, and many more!
What does success mean to you?
For me, success is achieving something that you put your mind to and work hard to get. Success also includes overcoming many failures that come along with the journey because if you are not failing, then you are not succeeding.
