Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariama Sallah.
Hi Mariama, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a mother to an adorable little girl who has inspired and motivated me to pursue my entrepreneurial journey. Becoming a Cake Designer never occurred to me but it was destined to happen. I went from zero experience in cake decorating to winning a gold medal in 8 weeks for my three-tier Pretty in Pink Wedding cake. I started my business because I want to use my passion and artistry to make a difference in people’s lives. In the very beginning, I experienced challenges that I overcame by educating myself and implementation. During the learning process, I realized that creating custom cakes to me is more than “just a cake,” it is about creating delightful memories through the connection I feel with the client and bringing their vision to life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Entrepreneurship is a bumpy road and a lot of times people looking in from the outside think we have it all figured out. The reality is that I didn’t think I would be pursuing this as my career path and I started because I fell in love with the craft but I learned real quick that I would need to educate myself in order to build a successful business. I struggled with a lot of things like pricing, standard operating procedures, administrative tasks, photography, etc. I didn’t have my business licensed or insured, no logo /branded business cards or a unique selling proposition but all that has changed. Learning and evolving is never off the table for me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a high-end wedding cake Designer who specializes in high-end Custom Cakes designs, cupcakes, and cakesicles. My most popular flavor is my yellow cake with a salted caramel cheesecake filling and a vanilla bean buttercream. My cakes are known for being “not too sweet,” I pride myself in balancing and making unique flavor combinations.
What I am most proud of is my daughter because she motivates me to be better every single day. Another thing I am proud of is my ability to grow as a person and business owner rapidly. What sets me apart is my flavor combinations, designs, and me as a person, I believe everyone is unique in their own way. I have a very bubbly personality and I strive for excellence
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes, I have, I started my business at the beginning of Covid but it was more like a side hustle for me at that time. I learned that being able to pivot is very important because people wanted smaller cakes for more intimate celebrations and if you build your business solely on huge cakes or one specific item, it may, or may not thrive during those times. Basically, you should be able to quickly adapt to change.
