Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Doyle.
Hi Mike, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in NJ and got involved in the punk scene after starting my band Lanemeyer when I was 18. We toured the east coast and mid west 7 times and the last tour we did the full US for 2 months. When the band broke up I moved to LA in 2001 (10 days before 911) to figure things out. 2 years in I stumbled across Graphic Design and decided to move back to NJ to put myself through school.
In 2006 I found out about freelancing which meant not having a boss. That sounded more of my style so I decided to take that path and have been working for myself since then.
My main gig for the past 14 years has been creating explainer animations for companies. I also have a webcomic called dailyBred (@yourdailybred on IG), and my punk podcast about that late 90s/early 2000s punk scene which has been going strong since 2018. Currently I have a little over 300K downloads.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Ha, no. The main struggles have been:
• My Dad dying in 2013
• Wife leaving me in 2014
Those really took the wind out of my sales but I pushed through. Both are the reasons why I live in Raleigh.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My main gig is fro drive80.com which is my explainer animation company. I take a companies 60 minute pitch and turn it into 60-seconds.
Locally I’m known for that and my dailyBrew comic. Globally I’m known for my This Was The Scene podcast.
The thing that sets me apart is that I don’t like putting on a bullshit show. I feel that 90% of the things I see online are complete facades. That’s not my style. If you listen to my podcast or follow my comic and meet me IRL then it’s like you pretty much know me.
Any big plans?
At this point I’m trying to figure that out. AI has my concerned about explainer animations. If there’s a way people can just enter a prompt and get a video in the style that I do then that will be sucky to say the least.
Pricing:
- $2000 – $10,000 for an explainer animation
