Meet Mique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mique.

Hi Mique, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got a lot of stories. I was born and raised in Durham, North Carolina aka Bull City, and discovered I could sing in the third grade. Shoutout to New Hope & First Calvary, where I sang in the youth choir and honed my abilities.

During high school, my bro Solomon Fox and I founded a creative collective called Young Bull, which continues to be our core musical focus to this day. We’ve put out three projects so far, and have an album, Windows, slated for release later this year. Beyond the music, my mission in life is to pay it forward.

Where I’m from, people tend to gatekeep information and resources because they think about it like, “If I put you on, how am I going to eat?” I’m trying to change that narrative and provide something for the kids that I didn’t have growing up. I have a lot of music and community-based projects to come in 2022.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No, not at all. I don’t think the past couple of years has been easy for anyone.

There are things that happen that you just don’t plan for, such as a global pandemic. As for creatives, the entire performance arts and entertainment industry was forced to look itself in the mirror and reevaluate everything. This pandemic pushed a lot of people to diversify their income streams, which for me took away from the amount of time I could spend on music. This was a pain but also pushed me to go harder.

Aside from the pandemic, navigating any high-interest industry is going to have constant obstacles and challenges. I’ve learned a lot through trial and error and have some great people in my corner. It’s all a learning curve, and ultimately, I’d say, it’s the ability to maneuver through the bullshit that defines you.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Well, I’m known for being a musical artist, but my creative and entrepreneurial outlets fall into a number of mediums.

I love working with other creatives, everyone from my fellow musicians to clothing and web designers. I wouldn’t say that I have a forte, but when I believe in something, I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

And honestly, I’m just proud to have made it this far. There have been so many times the odds have been stacked against me but I always seem to persevere and stand firm on what I believe. When it comes down to it, I believe it is my non-conformist approach that sets me apart.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
For one, be proactive so you don’t have to be reactive.

At the same time, learn to appreciate the moment.

This can be a tough balance but has been key for both my momentary and future well-being. So many pillars in my life have transitioned, and not being able to see people due to covid has made me appreciate and make the most of my time.
