Today we’d like to introduce you to Myla Erwin.
Hi Myla, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been counseling family and friends since my late teens. Although my own life was a mess. people always sought my advice and it made me wonder why I was able to help them and not myself. People say that counselors tend to be wounded healers; I believe that has been proven true in my own life.
I started school for counseling in the late 1970’s but ending up quitting in my last semester – fear of succeeding and being held to a high standard I might not be able to maintain. It wasn’t until moving to High Point and starting Vintage Bible College in Winston-Salem in 2006 that I realized I could counsel in God’s strength and not lean on my own wisdom. It made all the difference in the world!
I switched over to a university in High Point and completed my BA and Masters in Christian Counseling in three years and never looked back in my 50s! Having worked in non-profits practically all my adult life and around people with mental and emotional challenges, I opened my own business to help women and couples strive for mental wellness. I absolutely LOVE what I do.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Because I don’t accept insurance and tend to want my services to be available to those who need them the most, I work with people on what they can afford. Some can pay the full rate but most cannot. God never told me I’d get rich; He told me I’d make a difference, and that’s what I strive to do. He’s the head of my company; I just work here!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have struggled in the past with depression and divorce. I was a single mother for a long time and I appreciate how difficult it can be to try to balance your needs and your child’s, while looking for a mate, something for yourself. I’ve been blessed to be happily married now for 41 years but I’ve kissed my share of frogs, let me tell you. I think women tend to put others ahead of themselves and end up a bit resentful and feeling as if life has passed them by. I want to help them remember who they used to be before they got lost in sacrificing for the sake of everyone else, to revive their goals and dreams and determine how they still can attain them. I want to help couples remember the love they once shared and improve their communication so they can have the relationship they dreamed of having when they first met. All sessions are offered virtually which make it convenient for clients to schedule at their pleasure.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
High Point has a LOT to offer but with the furniture factories closing, a poverty mindset has set in for so many. I’m glad to see a mini-revival with so many businesses opening and the new ball stadium helping to drive that. I think the Triad has a lot of art and creativity to be tapped. The Triangle is not that far away and it would be great to see more collaboration between the two areas.
