Meet Nick Gaw of Downtown Durham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Gaw.

Hi Nick, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name was Nick. I was born in Fayetteville, NC, and grew up in Marshfield, Massachusetts. I have always wanted to be a part of the tattoo industry. I got into art, doodling my way through school and street art. This slowly connected me to the tattoo world, making me realize I could make art a career. After living in Philadelphia for a few years, I moved back to North Carolina. During this time, I had been getting tattooed and getting to know the people locally in the industry. I worked my way into my first job at a tattoo shop in 2018, continuing to draw and learn everything I could from my coworkers and friends. Soon enough, I was offered the opportunity to get an apprenticeship. It’s been a long and hard journey (shout out to ramen noodles for getting me through it), but I love what I do and the people I meet.

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
As with most people seeking an apprenticeship, it can be challenging. It was a tough time juggling my apprenticeship, job as a counter person, and constantly drawing. I had my fair share of ramen noodles and spaghetti O’s. My mentor gave me the tools to draw anything. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone daily to draw something I hadn’t drawn before. I am thankful for the time my friends have put into helping me actualize my potential.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a tattoo artist at Sacred Mandala Studio. I enjoy tattooing anything that might help someone feel better in their skin. I like when we both can be stoked about a tattoo. All bodies are welcome.
