Today we’d like to introduce you to Peiwei Cobo. They and their team shared their story with us below:
The company was founded by two brothers, James & Milton Cobo, since the early 2000s. The two brothers simply wanted to have fun dancing together at the beginning, and eventually, the team became internationally known and was invited to perform & teach salsa around the world. CoboBrothers Dance Co. (CBDC) has since been dancing, teaching & training Latin Dance in the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel-Hill (North Carolina Triangle Area) for over 15 years. The company has since been the leading salsa dance school in the US that produces nationally & internationally recognized artists. Currently, the company is co-directed by husband and wife James & Peiwei Cobo, who is the current world champion for professional salsa lady’s solo.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely has not been a smooth road. At the beginning, it was managing work & dance since the company was more of a side project from two engineers. And after the departure of one of the brothers, the company was ran by two full-time dancers who are husband & wife. Working as life partners can be particularly challenging; our rule was never bringing anything work/dance-related subjects into our personal life, so we can continue to enjoy our time together for both. Managing our company dancers, schedules & logistics are also one of the biggest challenges since a lot of our dancers also are full-time employees.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
We are professional salsa dancers. We teach, perform & host social dance parties that are Latin dance focused. We strive to develop complete dancers and push Latin dance to the next level. We not only teach students steps & patterns, but we learn, teach & root our company in the cultural aspects of Salsa as well as the techniques. We believe that salsa is a unique & beautiful art from that roots itself in Caribbean cultures, and our main instructor is actively pursuing a master student program in Afro-Cuban dance. We run a dance team that pushes dancers to dance to their best potential, and we definitely do not settle for “good enough.” We believe in dancing better, in its music, technique & culture.
How do you define success?
Being able to inspire dancers to dance, breath & live salsa! We aim to be educators and supporters of dance, and success means we have taught well, inspired dancers to continue dancing.
