Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Brown.
Hi Peter, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hey, my name is Peter Brown! I am a 25-year-old Alabama native who now resides in the great state of North Carolina in Greensboro. I can remember starting my photography journey at the age of 5 while at a cousin’s wedding in Buffalo, NY.
My mom was using a cheap disposable camera to catch a few moments while in our seats. I remember asking her for the camera and telling her “you’re not doing this right” that moment stuck with me for years until I would pick up another camera in my middle school years.
Going into high school, I persevered to create a business that I am currently still operating. I would later during my Undergraduate education change my major from Landscape Architecture and transfer from North Carolina A&T. To pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from UNCG. In my later years, Photography was always that thing that stayed with me. It would be the thing that would excite my day.
If I had to label my shooting style it would be versatile. I don’t just photograph one genre. My favorite is a combination of editorial and fashion photography but I do lifestyle, weddings, fine art and so much more.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This road has been nothing but smooth, essentially when I moved to North Carolina had to start from ground zero. I would end up losing what would have been growing clientele in Alabama as well. That for me was actually maybe the most exciting time in my career. There were a lot of comfort barriers being broken and I had to find my identity in my work.
The biggest hurdle would have been compared. Trying to mimic what other photographers were doing to gain clientele. That really didn’t work for me, now I create what I want when I have the time to and make sure I execute my client’s visions and expectations.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So my specialty has become studio portraiture. That had been a long-time dream of mine until I took a lighting class while in college. My professor at the time Todd Turner who is also a local photographer was an amazing teacher. That class would solidify the foundation of lighting for me to create the work I love to create now.
I’ve always been drawn to the fashion/editorial look. The limitless opportunities and perspectives really intrigued me and drew me into that work.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Whatever you choose to do, do it because you are passionate about it. Photography and art in general will make or break you.
Don’t go in with the mindset of how much money you think you will make from it because 9/10 of you will spend more than that just to get started. So please please please make sure whatever you do, you do it because you love it!
