Today we’d like to introduce you to Purvi Shah.
Purvi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In July 2020, my family and I packed up our lives in New Jersey and moved to Holly Springs, North Carolina—right in the heart of the global pandemic. At the time, I had spent nearly 19 years in education, serving as a teacher, vice principal, and most recently, a principal. It was a fulfilling career built on relationships, advocacy, and helping people grow.
When we arrived in NC, I paused my career to help my kids adjust to their new environment—new schools, new friends, and a completely new lifestyle. In those early days, I poured my energy into organizing playdates and meeting new families to ensure they felt settled during such a massive transition.
Eventually, I returned to education as a vice principal at Alston Ridge Elementary, but I began to feel a shift. As a mom of two teenagers, I realized how precious my time with them had become. I craved the flexibility to be truly present for all the moments, big and small. In July 2023, I took a leap of faith and started a new chapter as a real estate broker. While it wasn’t an obvious pivot, it has been a natural way to continue using the skills that have always guided me. Both careers are about listening, guiding, and advocating. Whether I’m helping a student find their confidence or a client find their dream home, the heart of the work remains the same: people first.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Making the leap into real estate came with its fair share of challenges. After two decades in a different field, I was suddenly starting over. I was determined to master everything—contracts, negotiations, pricing strategies, and marketing. I made it a point to be present at our market center, attending every training possible and soaking up wisdom from experienced agents.
One of the hardest transitions was moving from a “trusted leader” in education to “the new agent.” My perfectionism became a hurdle; I often hesitated, wondering if I was “ready enough.” I had to learn to give myself permission to grow in real time rather than waiting until I had every single thing figured out. What kept me going was my commitment to doing right by people. By leading with honesty and transparency, I’ve been able to grow a business that feels authentic to who I am.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Starting a new career—especially one as complex as real estate—can feel overwhelming. My biggest piece of advice is to be patient with yourself and embrace the learning process. It’s okay not to have all the answers right away. Just show up consistently, stay curious, and lean into every opportunity to grow.
One thing I wish I had known from the start is that waiting for everything to be ‘perfect’ will only hold you back. Perfectionism often leads to hesitation, but real growth happens when you take action—even if you don’t feel 100% ready. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; they are a vital part of the journey and, truly, your best teachers.
Finally, remember that building trust and credibility takes time. Focus on nurturing genuine relationships rather than rushing for quick results. Don’t hesitate to ask for help, whether that’s working with a coach, attending extra training, or seeking advice from experienced colleagues. Your willingness to learn and show up authentically is exactly what will set you apart.
