Meet Rafael Briceno of BP General Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rafael Briceno.

Hi Rafael, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m the owner of BP General Services, a local, family-owned company serving North Raleigh and Wake Forest residents. We have specialized in remodeling, renovations, and repairs since February 2016. I was born in Venezuela, South America, and came to the U.S. with my wife, Luisana, 18 years ago to Miami, Florida.

With my bachelor’s degree in Political Science, I had the skills to work in jobs with interpersonal relations, so I decided to work with a contractor’s company as a Sales Manager, and like any other job in Miami, that position came with more responsibilities and extra duties. What anyone else would see as an obstacle, I saw as an opportunity to learn other things about the field. I learned to supervise the crew, the different requirements for a positive inspection, understanding of materials, codes, and regulations, among other things. This was the cornerstone to build, in the future, what would become BP General Services. Years later, in 2010, I received the offer to come to North Carolina to work at UNC Health System, where I worked until 2015 when I felt the desire to do more, and together with my wife, I came to the idea of what is today BP General Services: a remodeling company with direct personal interaction with the customer.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
In my path through entrepreneurship, the first challenge I encountered was to build up the trust of our customers in the area. Through dedication and high-quality work, BP General Services have earned the trust of the residents of North Raleigh, becoming the most recommended remodeling company on the neighborhood website nextdoor.com.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
BP General Services is a local family-owned company that dedicates to the residents of North Raleigh and Wake Forest, offering remodeling, renovations, and repairs to their properties. We are proud to keep a reputation for high-quality work and quick response. We cover a set of services from decks, porches, sidings, and exterior paint, to flooring, tiles, drywall, interior paint, and bathroom remodels. In the last five years, we are proud to say that all our customers come from referrals from other customers. We stopped advertising. We don’t do marketing. Our jobs speak for ourselves. People can look to our Instagram and Facebook accounts to look to previous jobs and comments from satisfied customers and have a small taste of what BP General Services can do for them. We work directly with realtors and their clients as well, helping them have their properties ready to get in the market if they’re selling or having the new property ready to live under their expectations if they’re buying a new home.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I would recommend to find a person who has the knowledge, not necessarily in your field, but expertise in what needs to be done and what you need to know to achieve what you’re looking to accomplish. In my case, there was an specialized person in the matter who left a mark on me, who dedicated her time to make me realize the best route to reach an enjoyable occupation.
