Meet Robert Winne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Winne.

Hi Robert, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
robertWINNE Fine Art Studio

I am a contemporary abstract artist from the Richmond metropolitan area. As a lifelong sportsman, I take inspiration from the outdoors, which is reflective in many of my paintings, primarily with the beaches, inlets, and marshes along the North Carolina coastline. While I don’t consider myself a “landscape” painter, I often describe my works as “accidental landscapes.” My paintings have evolved from heavily textured pieces that utilized organic elements such a cement and marble dust to my most recent works in which I apply multiple layers of washes to achieve atmospheric qualities. I work primarily in Acrylic, Oil, and Cold Wax.

I am a graduate of Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, NC (approx. 40 mins east of Raleigh) with a degree in Graphic Design. Over the years, I have served as an Illustrator with the Department of Defense, an adjunct professor teaching Airbrush Illustration at John Tyler Community College, and as a freelance Illustrator for Ad agencies and corporate clients throughout Virginia. In 2004, I transformed my skills from a structured graphic design professional into an artist creating beautifully crafted abstract paintings. Over the years, I have had numerous solo shows and have been a part of many group shows, both in North Carolina and Virginia.

Most of my seascape paintings are inspired from fishing trips to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where I go numerous times a year. I first went to the Outer Banks in 1978 as a freshman in college and have been going there with family and friends for the past 45 years, mainly to Hatteras Island that is the southernmost point of the Outer Banks. A good number of my seascape painting titles incorporate the names of the small towns and beaches in the Outer Banks such as: “EAST OF BUXTON,” “AVON de FORCE,” and “COQUINA TIDE.”

Because so many in North Carolina are connected to the Outer Banks, I have many collectors and clients in and around the Raleigh area as well as throughout North Carolina. Whether I’m delivering new paintings to collectors or visiting friends, I always enjoy visiting the Raleigh area.

I am currently represented exclusively by Stravitz Fine Art Gallery in Virginia Beach, VA, and Crossroads Art Center in Richmond, VA. I am also an exhibiting member of the Metropolitan Richmond Artists Association and live and maintain a studio in Chesterfield, VA. My favorite colors are black and orange.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been a wonderful journey being an artist.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
My name is Robert Winne, and I am an abstract artist focusing on seascapes, landscapes, and florals.

My paintings represent my personal interaction with the outdoors, primarily with the beaches, inlets, and marshes along the North Carolina coastline as well as my unique interpretation from my travels, primarily living and working in Europe and the Middle East. “Put me on a beach with an incoming tide or fly me somewhere I’ve never been, and afterwards, I’ll go to the studio to capture those moments on canvas.”

RECENT RECOGNITION/SHOWS

Most recently, one of my paintings (“FIRST BLUSH”) accompanied an article on the Owner of Stravitz Fine Art Gallery in Virginia Beach. in the American Art Collector Magazine, September 2022 issue. American Art Collector is a very well-respected magazine highlighting shows and artists from the United States.

In November 2022, my painting “THIRD DAY OF APRILLE” won BEST IN SHOW at the Metropolitan Richmond Artists Association annual show.

Finally, in May 2022, I had a one-man show at Stravitz Fine Art Gallery that showcased new seascape and landscape paintings. The show was a tremendous success.

What’s next?
I plan to continue painting and to continue my fishing trips to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
