Hi Robin and Lori, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We are the owners and estheticians that founded skin & tonic here in Raleigh, and this is our story! We have worked together for the past 26 years, and run our own business since 2005. This July will officially be 20 years since we made the decision to be our own bosses and truth be told, it wasn’t a very difficult decision to make. We knew pretty early on that we had a similar work ethic, our viewpoints on skincare aligned and on top of that, we actually liked each other! We do wonder, without having met each other would we have ever done it and we’re so happy we never have to know. We began doing facials in a small room we rented in a hair focused salon studio which turned into an office space with two rooms and now to a 1200 sq ft, three room studio on a major road. We are proud to be partnered with one of the top luxury skincare brands called Biologique Recherche formulated in Paris, France, the homeland of skincare innovation. Our facial treatments and skincare line are normally found in 5 star resorts around the world, but you can get the same luxury experience right here at skin&tonic in Raleigh, NC! Our true pride and joy, is our ability to offer a more personalized experience and the relationships we have with our clients. Our estheticians are highly skilled, highly trained and care deeply about teaching you what is possible for your skin. Our biggest goal is to make sure you feel cared for while you’re rocking the skin of your dreams.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We’ve had our fair share of obstacles and challenges, like any business owner anywhere! By trade, we are estheticians. and while we know a lot about facials, we didn’t know a lot about running a business. There was a learning curve for sure. We faced a non-compete lawsuit from our former employer in our first year of business, and the lawyer for them requested our business plan in discovery. When we had to explain to OUR lawyers that our business plan was a scrap of paper where we added up what 10 facials a week would clear us, it was like wearing a neon sign that said we had no idea what we were doing. We have survived low economies, and now we can say a pandemic. Closing for 3 months in 2020, not knowing whether we’d be able to reopen was by far our biggest challenge. We are a lone skincare studio in a world of med spas. Thats for sure a challenge. Wearing a million different hats as a business owner is ALWAYS a challenge. We have to be the laundry service, handyman, social media specialists,the HR department and the list goes on. But whether we’ve willed it, or we’ve been lucky, we are still thriving. Obstacles have just become as common as a Thursday so we just had to learn to roll with it to be honest! Being in touch with what our customers want, really listening, has always guided us. The rest is just noise.
