Meet Sarah and Thad Lawrence of 2&3 Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah and Thad Lawrence.

Hi Sarah and Thad, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We met each other at Wingate University and struck up a friendship during our Freshman year. Once we turned that friendship into dating, we became inseparable. This leads to why we called our business 2&3. This is your warning, it’s kind of sappy. In order to communicate from a distance, we would hold up either 2 or 3 fingers. The numbers stand for the syllables “gorgeous” and “beautiful.” So if Thad wanted to tell Sarah she was beautiful from a distance, he would flash 3 fingers. If Sarah wanted to tell Thad he was gorgeous from a distance, she would flash 2 fingers. We would always refer to one another as the number and eventually, it stuck.

We both come from creative families, and photography seemed to be a common art form. We decided early on in our marriage to turn our hobby into a career. It started with Thad’s Dad getting remarried, then the DJ from our wedding getting married, then our friends. It kind of snowballed from there. We love word of mouth, and that’s really how our business grew. We have some really loyal clients, so once we finished their wedding, they came back to us for maternity, birth, newborn, and family photos. We are incredibly thankful for the trust that is placed in our hands by our clients.

To us, there are few things as rewarding as being invited into the lives of others to capture the moments and memories that are so important to them. Photographs are a side effect of what we do. The connections we make with everyone we meet are what drive the creativity and emotional connections to the photographs we make.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We started our business in 2007. Has it been smooth the whole time? No. There have been some years that were really lean in bookings, especially in weddings. It seemed like everyone was becoming a photographer and they were cheaper because they were just starting out. It became better when we decided to expand our business to include a lot of different types of sessions, not just weddings. It was a great move on our part because we love seeing those families grow and we can continue to see them even today.

Another struggle is determining how much to charge for a wedding, a family shoot, or any type of session we offered.

He was an Art/Photography teacher before he became a stay-at-home Dad for our first child; Sarah was a School Counselor. We had to make sure that all of our expenses were covered if we both were going to stay home and do photography full-time. It was definitely a little scary at first, but this is what we love to do. Photography has connected us with so many amazing people.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are the Lawrences and Sanford, North Carolina serves as our home for raising our 2 boys, Ethan and Weston. We live on a small farm with our pet pigs and chickens who often join in on photo shoots around the property.

We are a husband and wife team that will take your picture for any occasion, whether it be a wedding, a birth, for your family, or a professional event. We love making new friends and catching up with old ones for whatever they may need. We love to get creative ourselves and hope to capture the moments that you will cherish for a long time.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
We’d like to think we are approachable, so if you have any questions, we’d love to answer them for you. If you have any doubt about our personalities, you should check out our Personal gallery on our website; that place is always good for a laugh and to see how we started this whole photography thing!
