Meet Sean Kim of Meeple’s Brew

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Kim.

Hi Sean, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My husband, Justin and I have been board game players even before they met. We liked how much variety there is in the world of board games, and we loved how much you get to know about others through playing board games in person. We are very passionate about the board games, and we had a collection of over 200 board games before they opened Meeple’s Brew.

So when they visited a huge board game cafe called Snakes and Latte in downtown Toronto, we were inspired by how they could introduce the board game experience to others in a welcoming environment. We really hope that we can share that experience with our community at Meeple’s Brew.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well, we opened our door January of 2020, right before the pandemic, so you could say that there were quite a bit of challenges. We were especially hit hard because we didn’t get to bet a solid customer base before we had to shut down, and also because our business model of board game café promotes social gathering. We had to adjust our operations to adjust to the new environment since covid. We switched to take out only for a while, and we also had to sign up with delivery services to stay open. We also started offering board game rental so that customers can the games home to play instead of in store. We are very grateful to the community for their continuous support during this time!

We’ve been impressed with Meeple’s Brew, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Meeple’s Brew is a board game cafe in Morrisville, and we offer a welcoming and friendly environment for board game lovers and coffee lovers alike! We have a collection of +300 board games that you can choose from to play. We have staff member(s) who can offer recommendations or help you learn how to play! We also have a wide variety of menu items to appeal to everyone, including a full coffee/espresso drink menu, breakfast items, sandwiches, desserts, and baked goods!

Sean and Justin are the owners of Meeple’s Brew. Sean is working at Meeple’s Brew as the main barista/chef, and he is dedicated to offering the best services to provide the best experience for all the customers. Justin is working hard with our software engineer to bring you additional ways to improve your experience at Meeple’s Brew, including our awesome app that you can use to search through our board game library or earn rewards. They make an awesome team, and we hope you enjoy Meeple’s Brew as much as they do!

What does success mean to you?
We are hoping to add value to the community in various ways. We strive to offer a high quality coffee drinks as well as clean/healthy food options for the members of the community. We also take pride in providing safe and environment to everyone who visits us so that they would feel welcome.

We also are currently working hard to provide small events that benefit the community. For example, we recently held an artist market where local artists can meet the customers and showcase their work that they couldn’t share much this past year since a lot of venues and cons have been canceled. This event was very successful with a great turnout, which benefited both the artist community and the customers who enjoyed the market.
