Today we’d like to introduce you to ShaDonna McPhaul.
Hi ShaDonna, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story starts in 1996 after I graduated high school and joined the United States Air Force. I was afforded my opportunities to see the world. I was stationed in Germany, Korea, Hawaii, Florida, New Mexico and North Carolina. I also served in three combat tours to Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, and Afghanistan.
While stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii I gave birth to my son Charles, who is now eight. About five months after I gave birth to my son, it was time to bring my son home to meet my family. During that time, there was some miscommunication about my leave and I was given a letter of reprimand for being “Absent without leave” aka “AWOL” which sent me into a tailspin. After spending some time in the mental health ward at Tripler Army Medical Center and being diagnosed with anxiety and post-traumatic stress, it hit me that if that happened to me, it’s undoubtedly happened to other veterans which may have led to the high number of homeless veterans in our country. From there, I had an idea to start a nonprofit organization called “Mo’s Heroes” to help homeless veterans get back on their feet and transitioning service members not to become home veterans. We joined forces with quite a few nonprofits and for profit company to fulfill our mission.
In 2018, two years after retiring I realized I was pretty good at marketing, media and public relations and I decided to help other small business owners and nonprofit organizations gain more visibility as well. It’s been a challenge to juggle the work, life, social balance, but I do. I currently work various organizations and companies to include The Fayetteville Press Newspaper, Greater Fayetteville Chamber, the Liberty Point Rotary Club and Community Blueprint Greater Fort Bragg just to name a few.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Anytime you start some news and make many moves and transitions as I have, you always hit bumps in the road. Some of the major challenges I faced was always having to start over once I moved especially the move back to North Carolina where I had many doors shut in my face and some doors that just would open at all because I was new to the city and no one knew me.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Mo You Know. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business is “The Mo You Know” Marketing and Media Consulting Services where I specialize in helping entrepreneurs connect and collaborate with like-minded entrepreneurs and other opportunities. The thing that sets me apart from others is that I’m an Air Force veteran with a lot of experience working with people in various countries around the world. I’m proudest of my brand is that it’s relatable to community and we have something that can help most businesses. I want readers to know everything is possible working with us.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’m not sure if I believe in luck, but I do believe in favor and planting good seeds. I’ve had my share of “bad luck” but I think it was definitely bad decisions and miscommunication.
