Hi Shawana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey began at 13, fueled by a profound passion for creativity and elegance. I observed the women around me spending their Saturdays in the salon preparing for church or the week ahead.
A local salon owner took me under his wing, and I started as a shampoo assistant to earn extra money and learn the artistry. During high school, I pursued cosmetology as an elective course. Throughout high school, I worked part-time at the salon after school, and by the time I was 16, I was confidently styling clients, and the rest is history!
At the time, I didn’t realize that this childhood passion would evolve into an unwavering commitment to empower everyone through understanding beauty.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Looking back almost thirty years, I realize it wasn’t an easy journey. I grew up with hardworking parents and siblings in Durham. My father faced challenges, but my family remained close, and I leaned into the best stylists to develop my craft.
I traveled to Atlanta to experience the hair shows in the 90s, got married, and had a son! After a divorce, I navigated being a mother and entrepreneur. Being a single mom forced me to slow down, but my determination to provide and succeed kept me going.
I had to pause some courses and training I planned to attend. I also took on more clients to provide as a single mother. Some days, I would see 20-30 clients a day.
We’ve been impressed with Stylush by Shawana, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I aim to go beyond traditional haircare and create an exclusive experience where your hair becomes a masterpiece. Helping women feel confident and embracing their best selves is my driving force.

When it comes to natural haircare, I am dedicated to maintaining the health and style of my client’s hair by using only the highest quality products.
For those experiencing hair loss due to alopecia, stress, or health issues, I offer high-tech mesh integration methods for hair loss restoration, creating custom crowns and integration to help them feel like themselves again.
I offer exclusive, private appointments to prioritize each client’s unique needs. This creates a secure environment for open communication and personal transformation.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I have been fortunate to have had many inspiring individuals, both men and women, who have significantly impacted my life!
During my teenage years, a local male stylist graciously took me under his wing and taught me the art of styling and the proper care of hair
I have a client whom I affectionately refer to as Mom. While I can never replace my mother, this remarkable woman has been a guiding light, teaching me how to navigate financial challenges after my divorce. Our meditation, yoga classes, and financial planning sessions have been invaluable in helping me stay grounded in my business.
I also had the pleasure of meeting a local author in Durham, and our chance encounter has blossomed into a beautiful friendship. She visits me weekly and sends me uplifting messages that keep me motivated.
I am incredibly grateful for my amazing clients, who inspire and wholeheartedly support me in all my endeavors. We have cultivated strong relationships, and I deeply value their honest feedback and unwavering support. Together, we uplift and empower each other.
My husband and children are the best. They effortlessly support and keep me going.
