Today we’d like to introduce you to SkyBlew.
SkyBlew, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ma ColorfulDreamer. I grew up in Alabama. Most of my childhood was spent in foster care. I went from home to home. Most of the time I am pretty much a loner without many friends. And when I did make friends, it never lasted, as I had to move again. So I would escape into cartoons, anime, video games, and music.
Music has always been a part of me, you know? Certain songs would affect me in different ways. So it was pretty much Destiny for me to pursue music. It was and has always been my form of release. In Jr. High, I would write poems but never really took them seriously. As no one took me serious either lol.
But once I got to high school, things changed… My poems caught the attention of one of my afterschool teachers/mentors – Ms. Lockhart. She LOVED my writing and said I had a gift. She inspired me to expand my mind and find even more creative ways to tell my story in poetic form.
Because I said earlier, I’ma Dreamer. A ColorfulDreamer to be exact. So I would create stories and incorporate unique characters and ideas. Eventually, I started writing songs, connected with some amazing producers (my brothers), and the rest is history lol.
My big bro/musical mentor Mega Ran, took me on my first tours and continued to believe in me, even the times I didn’t believe in myself. The same goes for my fam and my crew – 2StepsAboveTheStars!!! It’s been an extensive, perilous journey for me, but I’m still pushing forward toward my ColorfulDreams!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been the literal opposite of smooth lol. Perilous journey… I’ve lost friends, family, and more along the way. Unseen forces working day & night to stop me from reaching my destination.
There have also been gatekeepers trying their hardest to keep me and my crew out. We’ve had to battle a system and industry that caters to artists who promote destruction to the community and fails to acknowledge artists who are different and have a positive message.
It’s like the further ahead I progress, there are millions more obstacles that get thrown in my path. I mean, the whole world basically shut down for 2 years… That’s the definition of “what’s the worse that can happen” haha… But hey, we’re still here and still pushing forward.
I keep my trust in God. I’ve come this far, can’t turn back now.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I don’t rap… I paint the sky, blew!!!
I’m known for being a hip-hop artist. But what sets me apart from others, is not only my sound but also the messages. It’s positive and uplifting, and I also create stories unlike what you’ll hear from most hip-hop out today.
I’ve created a whole world/universe in my albums. So there are characters, lore, and mysteries. I know that sounds wild, but it’s true. All you gotta do is press play…
I gotta say, I’m most proud of the positive effect that my music has had in the lives of the listeners (my family). There are people who tell me that my music has saved their lives. That’s unbelievable to me. I was a nobody in my mind. I remember being in foster care, feeling as if there was nothing in my future. Destined to be a loser. To be alone.
To be confined to a crappy life of failure and darkness. But that wasn’t the case.
So years later, to see myself become a successful independent artist who has released albums that have touched people around the world, toured multiple times, created music for anime companies and video games, etc, that’s a blessing. I can be proud of that.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Well, growing up I was a loner as I said before. But I was pretty much who I am now, I just didn’t realize it. Or didn’t really have the chance to show it to many people. I’ve always been a chill earth dude, funny, nerdy, and unique. I always liked to use my imagination and think outside the box.
Always been a Dreamer, so I can just zone out at any time and create a whole story, with characters, landscapes, and all. That’s a gift I’m blessed with. I even used to draw my own comics as well. I was lost when I was growing up though. At one point, I didn’t think it was cool to be myself. So I became a product of my environment; thought I had to affiliate with gangs, get into fights, etc.
That wasn’t me. I liked anime, video games, etc. But in the hood, they kinda look down on that. So I had to hide it behind closed doors… Overall, I just wanted to be myself and like the things that I like. I’ve always wanted to travel the world, have fun and just enjoy all that life has to offer, with the people I love.
I couldn’t really do that growing up, but thankfully, I’m doing it now.
