Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Wentz.
Hi Sophia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved working with my hands. Whether it was shaping clay trinkets for my American Girl Dolls, watercolor painting, or filming music videos with my friends, I was always caught up in some kind of creative project.
That spark never faded. I majored in Studio Art at UNCW, exploring new techniques and discovering countless ways to express myself. I fell in love with bringing ideas to life and knew, deep down, that I wanted to build a career around creativity.
Then, in 2022, grief struck in a way I could never have anticipated. The loss of my boyfriend turned all my post-grad plans upside down. I no longer knew how to dream… I no longer knew what to create… and I no longer wanted to.
As I healed, I kept creating—and curiosity eventually led me to candle making. The idea of capturing a memory, an emotion, or a feeling in a tiny jar of scented wax fascinated me. Fragrance, I realized, is powerful: it can transport you to a specific moment, or remind you of things you thought you’d forgotten. This was the beginning of Soph’s Beach House.
The ocean has always been a place of comfort, stillness, and connection with the Lord for me. It’s my biggest source of inspiration. I wanted to create a scent collection that could bring people straight there—the soft crash of waves, the warmth of the sun on your skin, the subtle nostalgic scent of sunscreen, the post-beach sun-kissed nap. After months of trial and error, I finally nailed my first scent, “Sea Salt & Santal,” and let my ideas run wild from there.
What started as a creative outlet to express my love for the ocean quickly became a passion project. I wanted to create fragrances that I hadn’t found before—reminiscent of a beach escape, with a focus on quality, non-toxic ingredients. I began selling at local markets and eventually built a website for online orders. I’m working on expanding even more into the online retail space, selling wholesale to boutiques, and I dream of one day opening my own physical shop. The process—branding, design, and face-to-face connections at pop-ups—brings me immense joy. Seeing others enjoy the scents I create reminds me that creativity is a gift: a way to heal, a way to express, and a way to love others.
I never imagined what working with my hands could lead to. Dreams and creative ideas returned in ways I hadn’t anticipated. Through it all, the Lord has continued to restore me through creativity. I am grateful, humbled, and excited to follow His lead into the ideas yet to be discovered.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business is rarely a smooth road, but it’s worth it if it’s something you truly love. I’m more passionate about creating than I am about the business side of things—marketing, website building, inventory tracking, bookkeeping, etc. It’s definitely been a learning curve as I figure out the best way to run my business sustainably, but I’m grateful that it provides a way to challenge myself and grow in confidence as a business owner.
Being a one-woman team, running everything myself can be challenging at times, but it’s so much fun to let my ideas run freely with no approval necessary!
From packaging design and label requirements to shipping without breakage, I’ve had to learn many lessons the hard way—but I count it all joy because I get to do what I love every day.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Soph’s Beach House was born from a love of all things coastal and a passion for clean living. I dreamed of candles that were non-toxic, effortlessly luxurious, and beautiful enough to double as home décor—but when nothing quite fit the vision, I began crafting them myself.
Soph’s Beach House specializes in luxury, high-quality products designed to transport you to the ocean—a beach house told through fragrance. From handcrafted candles to room sprays and perfumes, the coastal-inspired collection continues to grow, each piece capturing the calm, warmth, and nostalgia of the shore.
Every item is carefully handmade in small batches in Wilmington, NC, ensuring both quality and performance. In addition to fragrances, I also create commissioned textured paintings, bringing my artistic vision into homes in a tangible, personal way.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
For me, staying true to my vision is everything. I love paying attention to what my customers enjoy, but I always want to make sure the brand stays authentic—effortless, inviting, beach-house vibes. As I grow, I never want to lose sight of why this all started: capturing the essence of the beach through handmade goods and fragrances. That original vision is where the magic happens. I want to give myself space to play, try new things, and create from the heart.
