Meet Synquis Joiner of Raleigh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Synquis Joiner

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Synquis Joiner. I received my cosmetology license nine years ago. I started working at a hair salon Downtown Raleigh straight out of cosmetology school. I did lots of hair color, cuts, bridal hair and nail services. Guilty Beauty by Syn LLC originally started as a bridal hair business in 2019. 2020 was supposed to be my biggest year ever I had 14 weddings scheduled and only did 2 due to Covid. I took a huge loss and had to redirect myself, I invested into a micro blading course in hopes of learning, a new skill set to provide for my 2 children. Things definitely started slow, but doing Eyebrows somehow led me to body waxing and that’s when the game completely changed for me.. I fell in love with body waxing and never looked back. It’s just something about removing all the hair from your body. That’s so satisfying. In 2022 I took a leap of faith and started working for myself. As a single mother yes this was super scary but I knew I had a solid clientele and I also knew that my work was top tier.
This is year two on my own and I’ve learned so much about myself and so much about being a small black women owned business.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think being in this industry, you definitely go through ups and downs. You have your busy seasons, and you have your slow seasons. If you’re not prepared for the slow times, it can really impact your mental and emotional health. A few struggles, I faced along the way we definitely have to be social media and time management. I found myself trying to do as many clients as I possibly could, and that didn’t work out so well for me. I was becoming burnt out and uninspired. I had to slow down in order to perform better. Give myself some grace. Social media is a beast, and I still haven’t mastered it, but the trick is definitely being consistent even though the algorithm will give you a run for your money sometimes

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a licensed cosmetologist so that really gives me free range to do all things beauty related and I definitely feel like I took advantage of that. Currently my specialties are permanent makeup like ombrè powder eyebrows, full body waxing and natural nail services. My most popular services is the Brazilian wax. I’m known for being the most gentle speed waxer anyone has ever experienced. I’m most proud of stepping out of my comfort zone and just believing that I can successfully run, a business. The thing that sets me apart from others would have to be my authenticity. When you come to my place of business I want you to feel comfortable so I really focus on creating a safe space for all my guest. My hopes when you leave are that you feel more beautiful, confident and like the goddess you truly are.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
The app that I use for My Business is called GlossGenius. It’s pretty self-explanatory and inexpensive for all that it provides for my business I’m not much of a reader, but I will listen to an audiobook or two. I’m currently listening To We should all be millionaires by Rachel Rogers
