Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamieka Smith.
Hi Tamieka, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Back in 2010, I gathered my emotions and packed up some courage to live an abusive relationship of nearly five years. I had two little ones; one in diapers and the other in pull-ups. The plan was to simply survive. The journey became one of thriving. Through abuse, homelessness, instability, anger, PTSD, depression, and low self-worth, I rediscovered my voice creatively. The power of the pen not only helped me release 4 books (so far) but also inspired me to share my story to millions over the world on various platforms. I now empower others to write their business and unapologetically allow their light to shine in a dark world as an Abundant Cultivator Consultant of Wordsmith Enterprises.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course not. Life isn’t linear but the destination is always worth going to. My bumpy road had some wrong turns. Making bad choices led me to better ones: in life, career, relationships, and most importantly the relationship with myself. I used to be a person that had a problem saying no until I realized I wasn’t saying yes to myself like I should. Me being a people pleaser had me internalize my emotions which later caused irritability, resentment, and sadness. I learned that the word no is a complete sentence. It caused me to be more thoughtful about a decision before making a commitment. Without struggles, I wouldn’t have been properly cultivated like I needed to.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work as a Talent Acquisition Specialist at one of the largest health system employers in North Carolina. As an HR Professional, I pride myself in connecting great talent with opportunities. One of my greatest accomplishments in my career was leading a 100 hires in 90 days hiring initiative for the Environmental Services department with the biggest health system locally. I work with great colleagues. It could be my tenacity to hire on a high-volume scale with poise, kindness, compassion, and grace would be some things to help me stand out from the crowd. I’m a firm believer in letting your character be your brand. Others will notice as well.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
As a person born and raised in Durham, it is very similar when it comes to what I love about the Raleigh area. The overall growth within the years provides an opportunity for more access to opportunities. On the other hand, gentrification drove out the people of the cities with limited access to programs to assist those whose income didn’t increase with the growth. Where are they? Mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and financially their voices became obsolete because of major companies coming into the area. At times, I feel like a tourist. Some days, it makes me laugh. Other days, it is concerning. Everyone should have access to affordable housing. The Covid era really opened my eyes about that.
