Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Evans.
Hi Tammy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey really began with a simple suggestion from my husband Charles. He encouraged me to sign up on a dog-sitting platform, and at the time I didn’t see it as anything more than a way to help people and earn a little extra income doing something I loved.
Everything changed when one of my first clients asked, “Do you have your own business?” That question stopped me in my tracks. In that moment, I realized I could create something of my own! Something rooted in care, trust, and community. I went home, created an email address, and named it Community Pet Sitters because I wanted it to be exactly that. A service built to support the community I live in and love.
From there, things grew organically. I focused on providing reliable, compassionate, and personalized care. Treating every pet like family. Word of mouth spread, and soon I was serving families throughout Raleigh, Durham, Clayton, Apex,Fuquay-Varina, and Garner. What started as a side step became a purpose.
Today, Community Pet Sitters is more than pet care! It’s about peace of mind, consistency, and building lasting relationships with pet parents. I’m proud that my business reflects who I am: community-driven, heart-led, and committed to showing up with care every single day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all! It’ definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Like most small business owners, I’ve faced my share of challenges along the way. Building trust in a service-based business takes time, especially when people are trusting you with their homes and their beloved pets. There were moments of uncertainty, long days, and learning things the hard way like policies, pricing, boundaries, and balancing work with family and other responsibilities.
Another challenge was wearing all the hats at once caregiver, scheduler, communicator, marketer, and problem-solver while still making sure every pet received the level of care they deserved. There were times when growth required me to slow down, reset, and make intentional decisions to protect both the business and myself.
Each obstacle, however, helped shape Community Pet Sitters into what it is today. Those experiences taught me the importance of clear communication, strong values, and staying rooted in why I started to serve my community with care, integrity, and consistency. Every bump became a lesson, and every lesson made the business
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My full-time work is in retail, where I focus on customer service, merchandising, and day-to-day operations. I’m known for creating welcoming, well-organized spaces and for building genuine connections with customers. What I’m most proud of is my consistency and reliability—showing up every day with a strong work ethic and a people first mindset.
What sets me apart is my ability to balance efficiency with care. I pay close attention to detail, support my team, and make sure customers feel seen, valued, and supported, not just served.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I’m happiest spending time with my family, and serving the community I grew up in, leading a walking group Faithful Walkers. Giving back by adopting a highway and a Greenway trail. Staying connected, active, and involved is what truly fulfills me.
