Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Hankinson.
Hi Todd, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My wife and I got into the Reiki business entirely by accident. I (Todd) am a trained biologist and have over 30 years in the medicine and vaccine development business. Candace is a trained engineer in Material Science. Over a decade ago, Candace was struggling with a medical condition that had persistent pain. She did everything the doctors wanted her to do, but she has a sensitivity to certain medications, and was unable to control the pain adequately. We tried everything, from nutrition and exercise, to medical specialists and chiropractors as well as acupuncture, but nothing seemed to work. One night while watching TV, someone mentioned Reiki healing. We knew nothing about it, but were happy to find a possible new therapy that might be of benefit. We found a local practitioner, and after several sessions, Candace was showing improvement in the quality of her life. I then noticed they did beginners training, and not only thought this might be fun for us to do together, but we could then use Reiki on each other. That started our journey in energy healing, and now we own our own business, Silver Moon Reiki, LLC. We are Reiki Master Teachers as well as practitioners and teachers in other energy healing techniques, such as Angelic healing and Modern Shamanic energy healing.
We opened our business about 8 years ago and have really enjoyed it. We love working with others who have struggled to find a better quality of life, even after exhausting traditional therapies. Reiki brings people hope and will often open a whole new way of looking at the world for our clients, which is probably its most enduring gift for those open to the technique. Everyday we learn something new from working with our clients. We work with people and animals, energetically clear homes and businesses, sell crystals and stones, and teach classes. If you would have told us that we would be doing this 10 years ago, we would have thought you were crazy.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have done well with the business, but only because we have been patient and given the business time to grow at its own pace. We started part-time, which took the pressure off the business to fully provide for our living. Our goal was always to grow the business a bit every year and we have been able to do that so far. Probably the biggest struggle has been to get the word out on Reiki and to get people to try something that is very new and different for them. Over time, practices like Reiki have become more common which has been helpful, but there can still be a high barrier for some. We do well with new clients, as our background is grounded in science and engineering. We can speak the language those in the RTP area that work in the technical and medical fields, and this makes us easier to connect with, more approachable, and feel ‘safe’, which can be important when trying something so new. Reiki is really just another tool that people can use towards better health, and towards being healthier in mind, body, and spirit.
We fully support all traditional ways of healing, and Reiki should be seen as complimentary to typical western therapies. Having trusted local intuitions such as WakeMed and Duke now using Reiki has been a big step forward in this area.

Many people are unfamiliar with Reiki, so some background might be in order. Reiki (pronounced RAY-kee) is a Japanese energy channeling technique used to promote physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It has been around a long time, with the first clinic opening in Japan in 1922. Reiki therapy sessions work to balance the flow of one’s energy to remove blocks and improve the flow of energy around the body to facilitate relaxation, reduce pain, and promote natural healing. When energy is disrupted—whether from stress, illness, trauma, or emotional strain—it can leave you feeling depleted, overwhelmed, or out of balance. By restoring healthy energy flow, energy healing can encourage relaxation, reduce discomfort, and promote the body’s natural healing response.
Unlike most local practitioners who work alone, my wife and I work together as a team. Our clients get the benefit of both of our skills and perspectives, which we are able to seamless integrate in the session due to our close working and personal relationship. We have found that this dual-practitioner approach can provide faster insights and a deeper energetic clearing, facilitate healing for more complex or entrenched issues, and enhance one’s overall experience. It also is a very traditional way to do Reiki, as the early Master’s worked in pairs at their clinics, and often husband’s and wives owned the clinics and would work together. It is also a very powerful way to learn Reiki, as we can openly talk to each other and learn from each other while working on the same client!
The bulk of our time is spent on working with human clients, but also enjoy working with animals, as they also benefit from Reiki. Over time, we learned that energy is everywhere and in everything, so we expanded to clear homes, land and business of unhealthy energy as well. We also teach classes and sell crystals, stones and other products that facilitate energy healing.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
When it comes to our business and life, I would say the luckiest thing that happened to us happened in 6th grade. My father worked for the Secret Service, so we got transferred around a lot. Mid-way through 6th grade, he got transferred from Richmond, VA to Vienna, VA (which is a suburb of Washington, DC). My teacher seated me right next to Candace (my current wife and partner). If that wouldn’t have happened, we wouldn’t have the same life and certainly not the same business, and we are thankful for that happy coincidence to have occurred!
