Meet Trevor Hayes of Hometown Martial Arts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevor Hayes.

Trevor Hayes

Hi Trevor, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was first introduced to Martial Arts through wrestling at 9 years old and began kickboxing at 16. At a young age, I knew that I wanted to be an instructor and one day open up a martial arts school. After dipping my toes into competition (competing in MMA, Kickboxing, Wrestling), I realized I had a more of a knack for sharing knowledge and training others rather than being a fighter myself. My first experience coaching arose after going to fights to wrap hands, which landed me in the corners of various fighters. I began dedicating my time to personal training for Muay Thai, MMA, and Boxing shortly after. I spent over a decade coaching various fighters and teams throughout the state before finally diving in and opening my own school in 2021.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Preceding the opening of Hometown Martial Arts in 2021, I was overcoming health difficulties resulting from a Traumatic Brain Injury suffered in earlier years. It may seem like horrible timing to most to begin a new business venture following a major health crisis. However, my difficulties only motivated me further to open the doors to a school that could become a place of growth and solace for anyone who needs it. Having martial arts and a gym to go to got me through every dark period of my life. I’m honored to provide a place to help others work through life’s challenges alongside me.

As you know, we’re big fans of Hometown Martial Arts. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a Martial Arts school specializing in Muay Thai, Kickboxing, MMA, and Grappling. We offer group classes and personal training to everyone from the average joe interested in getting a workout to future world champion looking to train and compete. Our atmosphere is unique in that every single member is important to us. We strive to make training accessible to anyone who interested regardless of age, aspirations, or disabilities. We are 100% owned and operated by myself and my wife, Talia. We make it a priority to get to know all of our members and make sure their experience is tailored towards their goals. Our school is a place of growth. Our classes aim to teach members more than just how to punch and kick. We make it applicable to whatever your life circumstances may be. Inside our school you’ll find advanced students and fighters alongside instructors in taking newer members under their wing and providing advice and guidance. If you would imagine a school that trains fighters to be an intimidating, scary place, you’ll be pleasantly surprised and welcomed when you visit Hometown Martial Arts.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Even when the world seemed to stop, Martial Arts was able to bring people together. Our creativity was tested during the COVID-19 crisis, but we were able to host regular training sessions safely in outdoor public areas to keep morale high amongst like-minded individuals. No matter what is going on in the world, you can always find me coaching and using Martial Arts to bring people together.
